General Notes

The Office of Sponsored Projects (OSP) serves as the coordinating office for externally funded research and sponsored projects at The University of Texas at Austin. The mission of OSP is to assist faculty and professional research staff in their efforts to secure and ensure proper stewardship of external funding. We do that by assisting research faculty and staff with the following: proposal review, authorization, and submission; award negotiations and acceptance; account management; close-out, reports, audits, collection; professional development and education; export control, and research compliance.

Purpose

To counsel university facility and research staff in contractual matters relating to the preparation, submission, and/or negotiation of sponsored activity and research proposals.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the performance of professional work in the review and submission to sponsoring agencies of proposals prepared by faculty members, research personnel, and other university Principal Investigators.

  • Responsible for exercising sound decision-making and problem-solving skills when reviewing proposals for compliance with local, state, and university fiscal and administrative policies.

  • Coordinates review and final approval process for specific proposals prior to submission to the sponsors.

  • Interprets University administrative procedures regarding sponsored research and applies appropriate regulations when necessary.

  • Consult with faculty and staff members on proposal submission processes for prospective sponsoring agencies and organizations.

  • Responds to and resolves various sponsor requests for information and assistance, such as requests for Just-In-Time information or revised budgets

  • Performs related duties as required.

  • Accepts assignments on special projects which may involve oversight of high visibility projects.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in business or public administration, social sciences, or technical/scientific field

  • At least five years of experience in the preparation, processing, and/or negotiation of research grants and/or contract proposals.

  • Experience working with Electronic Research Administration (eRA).

  • Demonstrated knowledge of federal, state, local and university sponsored project guidelines and regulations.

  • Demonstrated knowledge working with deadlines and under pressure and the subsequent ability to prioritize tasks.

  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, effectively meeting overlapping deadlines.

  • Must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis for any employer.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced Degree

  • Certified Research Administrator (CRA) certification

  • More than five years’ experience in the preparation, processing, and negotiation of grant and contract proposals and awards 

  • University experience

  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.

  • Strong attention to detail with a proven ability to meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Salary Range

$68,000 + depending on qualifications

Working Conditions

  • May work around standard office conditions

  • Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation
