The Supervisor, Pharmacy Operations will take on responsibilities in the areas of pharmacy operations, technology and automation, medication safety, quality improvement, compliance, staff oversight and training, medication compounding and preparation related to all aspects of pharmacy operations. The Supervisor, Pharmacy Operations will report to the Manager, Pharmacy Operations to provide safe, timely, efficient, equitable, effective, and patient-centered medication use. Areas of focus for this position will include inpatient pharmacy and oversight of core processes of medication distribution to care areas where medications are used within the facility.

 

The Supervisor, Pharmacy Operations is responsible for leading and managing associated personnel, programs, services, and operations. Additionally, they will be responsible for direct leadership to pharmacy technicians, pharmacy students, pharmacy interns and indirect supervision of pharmacists and pharmacy residents who provide inpatient pharmacy patient care and operational services. The position will partner with other departmental leaders to ensure pharmacy purchasing, receiving, inventory management, and overall supply chain management systems are operating efficiently. The position will supervise pharmacy operations, medication use systems, human resource management, associated areas of responsibility.

 

The position requires the ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with patients, physicians, nurses, pharmacists and allied health professionals from all clinical disciplines regarding activities related to the improvement of medication use. Ensures that all activities are consistent with overall hospital objectives. The position demonstrates competence to provide pharmaceutical care for neonatal (birth-discharge), pediatric (birth to 11 years), adolescent (12-18), adult (19-65), and geriatric (66-over) patients.

Responsibilities

Major job responsibilities include:

 

Medication systems and operations coordination

• Supervise the provision of safe, timely, efficient, equitable, effective, and patient-centered pharmacy patient care services and operations for areas of responsibility
• Manage technology and automation to allow for optimum resources.
• Assure that existing automation is being utilized at the highest level of efficiency and develop efficiency standards for each.
• Assure compliance within sterile compounding (USP 797), non-sterile compounding practices (USP 795), and handling of hazardous drugs (USP 800)
• Assist and coordinate efforts to ensure operations meet compliance and quality improvement standards and initiative
• Support quality assurance programs for pharmacy services designed to objectively and systematically monitor care, pursue opportunities for improvement, resolve identified problems as may exist, and detect and prevent drug diversion
• Identify opportunities to redesign operational systems to maximize labor and operational efficiency.
• Supervise day-to-day operations while identifying and resolving problems which occur.
• In collaboration with Medication Safety Manager, review reports for medication errors, adverse drug events, ineffective service, or other problem identification. Analyze and implement quality improvement measures for improving organizational performance.
• Assure proper training for end users

 

Continuously Improve Pharmacy Core Processes

• Contribute to, implement and maintain pharmacy policies and procedures related to operations including, but not limited to: procurement, storage, security, and disposition of drugs and provision of pharmacy services.  
• Stabilize and continually monitor core processes of drug distribution and medication safety. Identify opportunities to improve processes based on feedback from staff and coordinate implementation of improvements in a timely manner.
• Remove barriers for staff to ensure optimal performance.
• Collaborate with other departments or disciplines to improve medication use safety and efficiency
• Works diligently to eliminate waste through creative solutions and staff engagement

 

Deliver comprehensive pharmaceutical care to patients

• Work collaboratively with other clinicians and health-care providers during routine communications
• Review medication orders for accuracy, appropriateness and efficacy
