General Summary

  • The Lead Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for sterilization techniques, operations of technical equipment, maintaining staff schedules and assignments.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs decontamination, cleaning, assembly, and sterilization of instrumentation, CASE carts, and equipment according to manufacturer specifications and hospital policies.

  • Demonstrates proper use of PPE, infection control standards, and biological/chemical sterilization indicators.

  • Inspects, labels, and documents sterilizer loads, tray integrity, and test results to ensure compliance and quality.

  • Tests and maintains instrumentation for proper function, removing defective equipment from service and notifying supervisor.

  • Maintains daily inventory of equipment and supplies; develops instrument projections for upcoming cases.

  • Provides technical assistance in the operating room and responds to OR calls to make critical decisions regarding tray sterility.

  • Assists in scheduling, training, and departmental recordkeeping in support of the Sterile Processing Supervisor.

  • Identifies workflow inefficiencies, implements process improvements, and fosters continuous quality improvement.

  • Develops and delivers training for sterile processing staff, ensuring compliance with best practices and industry standards.

  • Promotes a collaborative team environment and participates in required call rotation, including holidays.

Education

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.


Work Experience

  • Minimum of three months experience in sterile processing, preferred.


Certification/License

  • Sterile Processing Technician certification required within first year of employment

Mental/Physical Requirements

  • Considerable mental concentration required to operate equipment and properly care for instruments and equipment. Standing, walking, lifting up to 50lbs, reaching required. Mental and Emotional Requirements: Works in close proximity to others and/or in a distracting environment.


Working Conditions

  • Exposed to wet and/or humid conditions during decontamination of instruments. Occasional exposure to temperature fluctuations, fumes, or airborne particles, exposure to communicable/infectious disease via contact with contaminated instruments and supplies. Must be able to work in a small, confined area for long periods of time.
