Job Summary

Mass General Brigham (MGB), a not-for-profit academic healthcare system established in 1994 by Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) and Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), provides a full continuum of care, encompassing two academic medical centers (AMCs), community and specialty hospitals, a managed care organization, a network of employed and affiliated physicians, community health centers, home care, home hospital, a health insurance plan, and other health-related entities. MGB is dedicated to advancing patient care, research, education, and community service through innovation, performance, and high-reliability across all components of our delivery system. Primary care is delivered by faculty members of the Division of General Internal Medicine in the Department of Medicine of the Academic Medical Centers (BWH and MGH) and by community-based practitioners employed across the system’s geography by the Mass General Brigham Medical Group (MGBMG). The primary care delivery system also comprises over 200 Advanced Practice Providers (APP) in our AMC practices, Community Health Centers, and MGB MG practice sites.

MGB seeks a visionary and strategic physician leader to serve as the inaugural Chief of Primary Care. This role presents a unique opportunity to shape the future of primary care within a premier academic health system while significantly improving the experiences of both patients and healthcare providers. The selected leader will be responsible for operational strategy, innovation and new care models, workforce development, and clinical care delivery for primary care practices across MGB’s employed primary care groups, which include over 1,300 physicians, 103 clinical practices, and 2.7 million annual patient visits, serving more than 900,000 unique patients. This leader will play the leading role in advancing MGB’s mission to provide high-quality, patient-centered care focusing on care delivery models, innovation, patient access, patient and provider experience, and population health needs, particularly for patients enrolled in Massachusetts Medicaid and Medicare Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs).

Key responsibilities include developing and implementing innovative care delivery models to enhance patient access, improve quality and outcomes, and foster a culture of engagement, wellness, professional excellence, and career development among primary care providers. The Chief of Primary Care will report directly to the Executive Vice President/Chief Integration Officer, MGB and will collaborate closely with interdisciplinary leaders across the system, including but not limited to the MGB Chair of the Department of Medicine, the AMC Chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine, the MGB Medical Group President and COO, and the MGB Chief Population Health Officer.

 

Qualifications

Principal Duties and Responsibilities: 

Clinical Leadership and Oversight 

• Oversee all clinical and operational aspects of primary care practices and providers across the health system to ensure the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care. 

• Work collaboratively and closely with the AMC Chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine, who is responsible for faculty members’ academic activities and advancement, and division administrative responsibilities, ensuring alignment of clinical work schedules and responsibilities to overall effort allocation within the division.
• In a culture of continuous innovation, learning, and improvement, champion the design and deployment of evidence-based care models and clinical practice to meet the needs of MGB patients, enable primary care providers to thrive, and enhance clinical outcomes and chronic disease management.
• Work with community hospital PCOOs, the MGBMG PCOO, and others to develop community-based residencies and clinical APP training in disciplines not currently offered within MGB’s education enterprise, (e.g. family medicine).
• Create recruitment pathways and relationships to support clinician acquisition and retention.
• Work with clinical leaders of specialty services, including chairs, to ensure seamless care coordination, and collaboration on consultation needs and response, including e-consults and other innovative consultation modes.
