About the role

Overview:   Universal Engineering Sciences (UES) has an opening in our Construction Services Department. UES is a nationwide leader in Geotechnical Engineering, Construction Materials Testing and Inspection, Building Code Compliance, Environmental, Occupational Health & Safety, and Building Envelope.
This position is a key and vital part of the UES Team!  Your day as the Lab Supervisor in the Construction Services Department at UES will be both challenging and rewarding. As the materials testing lab supervisor, your responsibilities would include oversight and managing the daily lab activities under the materials testing lab manager. We are looking for a person who has a team player mentality, leadership skills, and great attention to detail. A person who can work independently and prioritize, organize, and pragmatically complete required tasks.

Physical Demands & Work Environment: Required to drive, stand, walk, use hands to type, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance, talk, and hear; body motions and movements include bending, twisting, reaching, stooping, pulling, kneeling, lifting, carrying, and pushing, with or without reasonable accommodationThe employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 35 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodationThe testing process for the various construction materials (i.e., soils, concrete, asphalt, etc.) is repetitive in nature several times per hourThe technician’s primary duty is to test soil compaction and test the compressive strength of concrete samples, as well as testing other construction materials; testing these samples requires extensive manual lifting and handling.  The manual lifting is performed individually, and the weights manually lifted range from a 0-75+ pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation Weights in the 0-75-pound range are lifted frequently (From 33% up to 66% of the task period) with a frequency range 10 – 35 repetitions per hour, with or without reasonable accommodation Weights in the range of 35 – 75+ pounds (concrete cylinders and soils) are lifted frequently (From 15% to 30% of the task period) with a range of 5 - 15 repetitions per hour, with or without reasonable accommodation  Construction materials are manually lifted and carried distances on average ranging from a few feet to 75 feet, but may occasionally exceed 75 ft in walking distance and are unloaded manually at our lab and carried inside for testing, with or without reasonable accommodation  On average the workdays range from 7 - 12 hours  Job site conditions may or may not be accessible by vehicle, including wetlands, swamps, grasslands, and fields with uneven surfaces, sand, brush, and other natural and man-made obstaclesThe testing work is performed inside and outside the lab with exposure to: dirt, dust, sun, heat, and humidity The testing work is performed outside on the field with exposure to: dirt, dust, sun, heat, and humidity This job is primarily and regularly exposed to outside weather conditions and construction sites where the noise level is usually moderate to loudThe testing process for the various construction materials (i.e. soils, concrete, asphalt, etc.) is repeated several times per hourThe technician’s primary duty is to test soil compaction and test the compressive strength of concrete samples, as well as testing other construction materials; testing these samples requires extensive manual lifting and handling; the manual lifting is performed individually, and the weights manually lifted range from a few pounds up to 75+ poundsWeights in the 5 - 75-pound range are lifted frequently (From 33% up to 66% of the task period) with a frequency range of 10 – 35 repetitions per hourWeights in the range of 35 – 75+ pounds (concrete cylinders and soils) are lifted frequently (From 15% to 30% of the task period) with a range of 5 - 15 repetitions per hourConstruction materials are manually lifted and carried/moved distances ranging from a few feet up to 75 feet in walking distance and are unloaded manually at our lab and carried inside for testingThe workdays usually range from 7 - 9 hours  This job is primarily and regularly exposed to outside weather conditions and construction sites where the noise level is usually moderate to loud 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Maintaining lab workflow & organization
  • Receiving samples, reviewing & entering test data into FDOT’S online database (mac)
  • Performing laboratory tests as required for construction materials testing in accordance with USACE, ASTM
