Staff Learning and Inclusion Coordinator

SUMMARY

The Staff Learning & Inclusion Coordinator will: develop, organize, facilitate, and track staff training and professional development; help drive the implementation and advancement of Birmingham Zoo’s Inclusion Framework to be a safe and welcoming environment; serve as main contact and facilitator of community partnerships for organizations representing diverse communities

DUTIES

1. Oversee Staff Learning & Professional Development
   • Maintain, update, schedule, and facilitate the Zoo’s in-house employee learning program (needs assessments; scheduling and facilitating trainings such as new employee onboarding, new hire onboarding, and customer service training; tracking training attendance and participation for AZA accreditation records)
   • Assist BZI teams with training development and facilitation, planning, collaboration, team-building, and other tasks, when available
   • Research, develop, recommend, and execute creative strategies to foster the organization’s staff learning goals
   • Maintain knowledge of best practices regarding professional learning
2. Foster Inclusion & Positive Work Culture
   • Serve as Vice-Chair of BZI’s DEAI Committee, working to develop, implement, and advance BZI’s Inclusion Framework to cultivate a safe and welcoming environment for team members and visitors
   • Collect, analyze, and keep record of organizational data to demonstrate progress toward DEAI goals
   • Maintain knowledge of best practices regarding DEAI and serve as a resource for staff to implement and move toward the Zoo’s strategic vision of DEAI
   • Solicit and respond to employee communication and feedback, working proactively to advance a positive work climate at BZI, closely monitoring the morale of staff and taking appropriate action to resolve issues
3. Lead Community Engagement
   • Foster, deepen, and maintain partnerships and collaborations with community organizations representing diverse identities in the greater Birmingham area and beyond
   • Determine, communicate, and facilitate service to the community in ways that foster collaboration and connection between BZI and community members
4. Other related duties as assigned

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

• May support supervision of interns and volunteers, as assigned

SAFETY ANALYSIS

The Staff Learning & Inclusion Coordinator may be impacted by hazardous exposures common to an office environment as well as public safety in an outdoor environment. 

Thorough understanding of guest safety protocols, particularly with young children is required.

Specific training and procedures will be provided, designed to maintain safety of people as the highest priority of the zoo followed by the safety of the animal collection. 

The use and understanding of a variety of personal safety equipment is mandatory. 

All employees of the Zoo are required to be familiar with the Zoo’s overall safety policies as outlined in the employee handbook as well as being responsible for reporting any injury immediately to the first aid department.
