POSITION 27S5 TITLE: Substitute Custodian III (2026-2027)
LOCATION: Countywide
EMPLOYMENT TERM: As needed. Typically eight hours per day, but flexible as needed by school starting time. 2026-2027 school year.
BID PERIOD: July 8-24, 2026, 3 pm
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Maintain the cleanliness, sanitation, and overall attractiveness of the school building and assigned grounds so that they present no problems or interruptions to the educational program.
2. Clean and preserve assigned interior spaces (e.g., classrooms, offices, media areas, hallways, entrances, cafeteria/common areas) including sweeping, dusting, vacuuming, spot/wet cleaning, emptying trash receptacles, and washing windows as assigned.
3. Clean, sanitize, and restock restrooms; clean and sanitize plumbing fixtures and drinking fountains in assigned areas.
4. Perform floor care as assigned, including scrubbing, mopping, disinfecting, polishing hard-surface floors; stripping, waxing, and buffing/polishing floors; and operating/maintaining sweepers and floor scrubbing/cleaning equipment.
5. Remove waste and trash from assigned areas and prepare it for proper disposal.
6. Maintain entrance areas and sidewalks in a safe condition, including keeping areas free of debris and performing snow/ice removal and treatment (e.g., salting) as assigned.
7. Maintain grounds for proper appearance and safety, including cutting and trimming grass; operating grounds equipment as assigned (e.g., push mowers and string trimmers/weed eaters/zero turn mowers); removing litter/refuse; and performing seasonal exterior tasks as directed.
8. Perform minor maintenance and repairs consistent with training and assignment, including but not limited to repairs to window shades, changing light bulbs, simple painting, minor furniture/equipment repairs or adjustments, and minor plumbing/electrical tasks; report repairs beyond scope to the principal/supervisor or maintenance department.
9. Have the building prepared and ready for daily use as directed, including supporting opening/closing routines (e.g., unlocking/locking), appropriate lighting, and promptly reporting temperature/HVAC comfort concerns or system issues through established procedures.
10. Move, set up, and shift furniture/equipment to support cleaning, room readiness, and special events or presentations as directed.
11. Monitor custodial supplies and equipment; assist in ordering supplies; keep basic custodial supply records/checklists as required so that custodial duties are not interrupted.
12. Promote a safe environment by correcting minor safety hazards when observed (when safe to do so) and immediately reporting major safety hazards; follow county policies/procedures and applicable safety requirements (including State Fire Marshal rules as applicable).
13. Immediately report vandalism, damage, or other concerns affecting school property to the supervisor.
14. Assume responsibility for end-of-shift security routines as directed (e.g., ensure doors/windows are secured and manage lights as needed).
15. Maintain regular and reliable attendance and punctuality consistent with assigned schedule.
16. Display flag.
17. Keep the outside of the building free of marks (e.g., remove or report graffiti) as feasible.
18. When assigned to non-instructional or closed facilities, perform periodic checks for security (doors/gates), visible issues (e.g., leaks), and maintain a rolling inventory of items at closed facilities; report concerns to the facilities department.
19. Assist at other buildings as needed when directed by county office.
20. Assist with basic monitoring/operation of building systems (heating/cooling, security, or fire safety systems) when trained/authorized and as directed; report deficiencies.
21. Other duties of a custodial nature as directed by the principal or other county supervisors.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Have a knowledge of and physical capability to perform assigned duties.
2. Possess a personality for working in proximity with children while being compatible with a positive school environment.
3. Able to perform tasks which may range from light cleaning to heavy lifting.
