As a Distribution Utilities Maintenance Mechanic, you will directly support the utility infrastructure serving thousands of students, faculty, and staff across the University of Iowa’s Main Campus in Iowa City and Oakdale Campus in Coralville. Your work will help maintain the safety, cleanliness, and operability of electrical distribution substations, electrical rooms, shops, warehouses, and equipment such as portable lights, generators, and pumps.
You will support day-to-day operations, conduct safety inspections, maintain accurate records, and help improve inventory and shop practices. This opportunity is well suited for a self-driven, mechanically inclined individual who enjoys solving problems, tackling varied assignments, and identifying what needs to be done next.
What You’ll Do
- Perform general maintenance and cleaning of Utilities Distribution facilities, including painting, replacing filters, grounds upkeep, snow removal, and basic maintenance of lighting, ventilation, doors, windows, plumbing, drains, sump pumps, and tools
- Complete scheduled preventive maintenance and inspections at electrical distribution substations, including eyewash station maintenance, transformer inspections supporting Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) requirements, and upkeep of portable equipment such as generators, lights, and pumps
- Conduct and document safety inspections for forklifts, shop tools, ladders, extension cords, and related equipment
- Assist Utilities trades and staff with general maintenance and physical work, including cable and piping installations, light-pole replacement and repair, preventive maintenance inspections, safety program activities, and safety monitoring
- Perform utility locates during peak construction season to support campus construction and Utilities team needs
- Use the computerized maintenance management system to create, update, document, and complete work orders accurately
- Complete and document pre-job hazard assessments, provide pre-job briefings as needed, and coordinate daily work activities and equipment status with team members
What You’ll Bring
- High school diploma or GED; trade, vocational, military technical training, or a two-year technical degree in industrial maintenance is beneficial
- Minimum two (2) years of experience in general electrical or mechanical maintenance, facilities maintenance, or construction; a two-year technical degree in industrial maintenance may substitute for the experience requirement
- Working knowledge of industrial facility or utility maintenance methods, small power and hand tools, basic industrial drawings, and technical manuals
- Knowledge of safety regulations and practices associated with utility or industrial operations, including working safely around medium- and high-voltage equipment, following ENGIE safety requirements, and performing assigned work with minimal supervision
- Strong problem-solving, documentation, communication, and teamwork skills, with a willingness to anticipate team needs, learn new responsibilities, and assist electricians in completing work safely and efficiently
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and comfort using computers and mobile technology to perform and document corrective and preventive maintenance activities
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record, with the ability to operate a company-owned vehicle; a Class A commercial driver’s license or willingness to obtain one is preferred

Additional Details
- This role requires daily attendance at the job site. The general work schedule is Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and consistent attendance is essential
- The work environment is approximately 20% indoors and 80% outdoors, with exposure to weather and job-site conditions that may include heat, cold, dust, and noise
- Ability to manage multiple assignments accurately and within established timelines while working independently
- Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions and communicate through portable radio
