The role of Construction Manager sits within project delivery of SPM 132kV Networks business reporting directly to the Lead Construction Manager working for SP Energy Networks. The department is responsible for the construction of, new build, replacement, refurbishment and or other associated major transmission projects you will be one part of a multi-disciplined team responsible for delivering the project leading the construction phase.
What you’ll be doing
As the Construction Manager you’ll provide support for project technical input for planning and development stages including supporting the build-up of all pre-construction information and will provide technical expertise to project delivery strategy, project programme, and support and assist the Principal Designer to coordinate the design stages.
You’ll assist with the delivery strategy and preparation of contract bid packages of work. Lead the technical analysis for each contract and proactively resolve technical queries this includes leading the technical evaluation of each bid to meet key milestone dates for award and site start.
Provide leadership of the Construction Management Team (CMT) providing technical support, and advice, this will include management of several onsite contractors.
Deliver work with a high degree of autonomy and in a team consisting of Project Management, Quantity Surveyor’s, Engineers, Safety, Environmental and Quality advisors. Experienced in site environmental legislation, waste, and mitigation.
Supporting on all quality standards and specifications with a focus on planning and monitoring of the works using the contractor’s inspection and testing regime this will include control over all material and free issue equipment. Support and Coordinate project development design, planning, estates, and wayleaves and procurement stages to support contractor access requirements where required.
What you’ll bring
Good knowledge of the installation and testing techniques associated with the following areas: excavations, ducts, trenches, troughs, foundations, rebar installations, structural steelwork, building direction, cladding, roofing, drainage, NRSWA, electrical earthing installations, fencing, use of concrete and control of contaminated ground - with experience in planning and management of civil and electrical works at 33kV and 132kV, including enabling, foundations, buildings and remediation works.
Expert understanding of electrical design drawings, circuit diagrams, wiring diagrams and inspection and testing. Strong leadership and planning skills. Experienced in the management of NEC Option B and FIDIC type contracts.
Significant experience in all current health and safety legislation and CDM Regulations 2015 including duty holder roles most notably in the Principal Contractor role. Proven ability to lead and work in a team and contractors’ environment.
Minimum five years’ experience as a Construction Manager delivering the Principal Contractor role and managing multiple contractors, although not a prerequisite.
Ideally BEng in Electrical Power Engineering or similar, or significant on-site experience (5 years minimum)
SP Energy Networks authorisations up to 132kV (although not a prerequisite).
Ability to implement and monitor quality assurance and environmental processes.
Proficient in IT applications: Excel, Microsoft Project, Word, Power Point, and good literary skills.
Current five days SMSTS or equivalent.
