About the role

Description

Student workers report to the University Farm, located 30 minutes from campus, on 400 acres of woods, prairie, and food production areas. Students will work with Farm Food Program (FFP) staff and other student interns to produce food for the campus community, dining services, farm stands, and local restaurants; and help maintain the FFP facilities and equipment. Students also potentially work with Farm Maintenance employees, other Farm Administrative staff, Farm research students or Faculty, and volunteers. Daily worksites may include fields, high tunnels, a greenhouse, a mushroom cellar, and more.

Pay Rate: $14/hour

Duties will include: 

  • Assist Farm Food Program staff with tasks outdoors and indoors including:

    • Sowing Seeds

    • Planting

    • Weeding, Mowing, and Weed Whacking

    • Assist in cleaning of greenhouse, produce harvesting / storage tubs, Food Program vehicles (Gators and vans), and other food production areas.

    • Harvesting, washing, weighing, and packing produce

    • Staffing Farm Stands

  • May occasionally be asked to help the Farm Maintenance staff with various tasks such as landscaping and setting up for events
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Requirements: 

  • Currently enrolled CWRU student

  • A love of the outdoors and interest in food production

  • Must have the ability to work flexible hours during the workday between 7:30 am and 2:30 pm and occasional evenings, Monday-Thursday, 26 hours per week minimum

  • Daily outdoor work is required and should be expected regardless of weather conditions.

  • Tool and safety training will be required

  • Must be able to work independently, as a part of team, and pay careful attention to directions and details

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and have access to reliable transportation to and from the Farm, as it is not easily accessible via public transit. If you don’t have access to a vehicle, sometimes carpools can be arranged but may need to rely on the Enterprise Car Share for days when a carpool isn’t available. Preference will be given to students with transportation.
  • Driver training will be required to be able to operate off- and on-road Farm vehicles.
