Description

Position Summary

The Swim Instructor/Swim Coach is responsible for planning and delivering high-quality swim instruction and coaching to individuals and groups in accordance with YMCA guidelines and program standards. This role promotes water safety, swimming skills, and personal growth in a positive, inclusive environment that reflects the YMCA’s mission and core values.

 

Essential Functions

  • Lead swim lessons or team practices for children and/or adults, adapting teaching methods to participants' varying ages and skill levels.

  • Instruct participants in swimming techniques, water safety, and proper stroke development.

  • Monitor and ensure the safety of all participants by enforcing pool rules and maintaining a watchful presence at all times.

  • Provide clear, constructive feedback to swimmers to help improve their performance and confidence.

  • Maintain accurate attendance, progress records, and incident reports.

  • Communicate effectively with parents, participants, and staff to provide a positive customer service experience.

  • Set up, clean, and maintain equipment and the pool area before and after each session.

  • Attend staff meetings and required training, including CPR, First Aid, and YMCA aquatic safety certifications.

  • Promote and represent the YMCA mission, values, and programs in a professional and positive manner.

 

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Current certifications in CPR, First Aid, and Lifeguarding or Safety Training for Swim Coaches (or willingness to obtain).

  • YMCA Swim Instructor certification or equivalent (preferred).

  • Prior experience teaching swim lessons or coaching swim teams strongly preferred.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to engage and motivate participants of all ages and abilities.

  • Ability to respond quickly and calmly in emergency situations.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to swim and demonstrate all major strokes.

  • Physically able to be in the pool for extended periods.

  • Ability to lift equipment and assist participants as needed.

  • Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and communicate effectively.

  • Position may require early morning, evening, and/or weekend hours.
