Weekend News Reporting Fellowship (Summer 2023)

Insider is hiring a paid editorial fellow to write about fascinating news as part of our weekend and global news teams.

As our weekend fellow, you’ll spend your time covering a range of news on the weekends (Saturday and Sunday) — including breaking, culture, and politics — and continue to balance daily news coverage with meaningful enterprise work during the week (Monday through Wednesday), which means researching, writing, pitching, and producing original follow-up stories and features. 

You should be a self-starter who has a passion for finding and telling great stories. We value flexibility, creativity, accountability, and a diversity of ideas and opinions. We want someone who is excited about our mission to get better every day.

You could file breaking news, as well as explainers, visual features, news analysis, and features. You should be comfortable handing a mixture of stories, working on tight deadlines, pursuing ambitious reporting, and juggling multiple responsibilities at one time.

An ideal weekend fellow would have: 

• An interest and curiosity in covering any topic such as politics, sports, culture, breaking news, health, and more
• An ability to produce clean, clear copy on deadline
• An ability to adapt to change and pivot when necessary
• Solid communication skills 
• An excitement for pitching ideas and collaborating with others
• Some experience covering breaking news stories
• Availability to work weekends
• Ability to work independently with a proactive approach

All our editorial fellows should have:

• A passion for digital storytelling, voracious reading habits, and familiarity with digital and social media
• Experience reporting and writing (school publications are great!)
• Ability to work quickly and collaboratively with a fast-paced team
• Solid proofreading/copy editing skills and light HTML/Photoshop experience

The Insider Fellowship Program is for early career journalists who want to spend six months learning from a newsroom full of passionate, dedicated journalists. Fellows are assigned to teams and become experts in digital storytelling. They produce real work that is distributed to our audience of millions, and by the end of six months, they are prepared for the next phase of their journalism careers.

• Fellows are paid $20 per hour (overtime when needed and approved)
• PTO and paid holidays
• Eligible for medical, dental, and vision benefits on 91st day of employment
