Senior Engineer, Noise and Vibration

As a Noise/Vibration Engineer with ABS you will be actively engaged in driving industry-leading research and development associated with the related fields for broad applications serving the marine and offshore industries. 

What You Will Do:

  • Lead R&D and technical service projects concerning airborne and underwater radiated noise and structural vibration analyses for the marine and offshore industries. 
  • Perform Finite Element (FE) vibration analysis using commercial software such as ABAQUS, ANSYS, NASTRAN, etc., and vibration measurement analysis.
  • Develop or update ABS publications regarding the requirements for noise and vibration.
  • Interact with clients, write reports, and give presentations to internal or external audiences.
  • Respond to internal and external inquiries related to noise and vibration problems.
  • Maintain and demonstrate thought leadership through technical publications and presentations.

What You Will Need:

Education and Experience

  • Minimum requirement of a master’s degree in Naval Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, Ocean Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • At least two (2) years of related work experience. 
  • A Ph.D. in one of these Engineering disciplines is a plus but not required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Solid background in hydroacoustics and skills in commercial software tools. 
  • Knowledge of ship machinery and propeller-induced noise is a plus.
  • Strong background in eigenvalue and forced vibration analyses of structures using Finite Element (FE) Analysis; experience in FE analysis of marine/offshore structures is a plus.
  • Proficiency with commercial software such as ABAQUS, ANSYS, NASTRAN, etc. 
  • Engineering data analysis skills.
  • Strong communicator with excellent oral and written communication skills. Excellent command of the English language.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Self-motivated continuous learning ability
  • Working knowledge of the ABS Health, Safety, Quality, and Environmental Management System or ability to learn it. 

Reporting Relationships:

This role reports to a manager and has no direct reports. 

Environmental Conditions:

Work will normally be performed in an air-conditioned office environment. Occasionally, the candidate will be required to visit manufacturing plants, remote field sites, or go aboard marine vessels or structures. Work will be non-manual, but the candidate must be able to walk and climb among equipment and structures.  Occasionally may have to lift between 5‒15 pounds.
