Job Details:
Mercer University's Grand Opera House is searching for a Technical Director on the Macon, Georgia campus.
Responsibilities:
The Technical Director is the resident technician of the Grand Opera House (GOH) facility with a comprehensive understanding of all technical and building systems. As such, the Technical Director is expected to be a hands-on manager that oversees and participates in the planning and execution of all stage events from first discussion to final accounting, as well as assists the Executive Director with assessments, corrective actions, and improvements to the total physical plant. The Technical Director is also expected to fulfill all administrative functions relative to the technical department, including contract rider review, renter preparation, stagehand and other casual non-box office labor payroll, event reconciliation, and annual budget planning assistance.
Duties include:
Comprehensively review and prepare for production technical requirements and associated cost forecasting for all GOH-presented and rental-entity events
Lead annual operating budget preparation for the technical department as well as special-purchase research and execution as provided for by annual restricted funding.
Oversee and complete in a timely fashion all administrative functions of the technical department, including (but not limited to) new employee processing, biweekly payroll, and final event costing.
Participate in the execution of productions and events, with a focus on using expertise in an advanced technical position such as sound, lights, video, rigging, as the resident technician for GOH.
Use seasonal downtime to review for cleaning, repair, or improvement elements of the physical plant, and execution of such cleaning, repair, or improvement.
Qualifications:
A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and four years of experience are required, which should include sound design and/or engineering, lighting design and/or engineering, production management, and general administration in a management capacity. Additionally, two years of simultaneous or sequential experience are required in video projection and rigging.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Proficiency in reading, understanding, and fulfilling requirements of stage performance technical riders, including identifying acceptable alternatives required to fit within the specific limitations of the Grand Opera House.
Ability to work with rental representatives, incoming technical representatives, and others requiring technical direction in a timely manner and with a proactive approach to problem solving, cost efficiency, and clear communication.
Ability to work cooperatively within a team environment with other members of the Grand Opera House full-time and regular part-time staff, and to direct proactively and lead by example casual stage labor.
