Your Impact
You will protect the products that protect life, capture truth, and accelerate justice. You will work closely with our diverse engineering teams to identify, collect, and review ideas for patentability. You will be responsible for conducting searches, drafting patent applications, and prosecuting both domestic and foreign patent applications. You will also have opportunities to assist with ongoing litigation, legal opinions, and other IP-related projects beyond the realm of patent prosecution.
What You’ll Do
Location: Hub based: Scottsdale, AZ, Seattle, WA, Boston, MA, Denver, CO, Atlanta, GA, Sterling, VA, San Francisco, CA
Reports to: Sr. Director of IP
- Draft provisional and non-provisional patent applications related to fields of electrical engineering, computer engineering, and/or computer science
- Draft responses to office actions and other official communications from both U.S. and international patent offices
- Review invention disclosures, conduct prior art searches, and communicate findings to inventors
- Conduct invalidity searches and summarize results for preparation of legal opinions
- Analyze expected scope and potential value of patent applications, recommend filing strategy in terms of both timing, focus, and country or countries in which to potentially file or further file a given matter
- Operate in a largely independent environment, where the day-to-day completion of tasks is mostly self-driven, but team members are readily accessible and available to help as needed
- Join forces with other IP members to broadly manage aspects of IP portfolio, including by identifying new workflows, providing feedback on existing tools and approaches, as well as assisting with internal reporting efforts
- Educate fellow employees regarding intellectual property and related Axon policies and procedures
- Handle other types of IP matters depending on need and interest, including trademark and/or copyright matters
What You Bring
- Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office
- Associate patent attorney with 1-2 years of law firm experience OR patent agent with 2-4 years in-house or law firm experience; experience must include drafting patent applications in the mechanical, electronic, and/or computer-related arts
- Some knowledge of electrical circuits and/or computing technology, such as network protocols, audio or video processing, microprocessors, databases, or user authentication, as well as interest in learning about technical fields with which you may be less familiar
- B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent
- An intellectual curiosity for the legal and linguistic challenges associated with capturing innovations in written form, as well as an ambition and ingenuity for exploring the various ways to best protect the ideas that protect life, capture truth, and accelerate justice!
