The Pharmacy Technician – Ambulatory supports one of Cleveland Clinic's busiest outpatient pharmacies, located in the JJ Building on Euclid Avenue at Main Campus. Processing approximately 1,100 prescriptions each day, this high-volume pharmacy offers caregivers the opportunity to develop expertise across multiple areas of ambulatory pharmacy operations. Responsibilities include assisting patients at the register, preparing new and refill prescription orders, performing prescription data entry and insurance processing, managing inventory through cycle counts, restocking, and ordering supplies, and providing exceptional customer service to patients, providers, care teams, and other internal partners. Working closely with pharmacists and fellow technicians, caregivers rotate through multiple workflow stations to ensure accurate, efficient medication dispensing and a seamless patient experience in a fast-paced outpatient environment. 

A caregiver in this position will work full-time, Monday through Friday, rotating 8-hour shifts of 6:45am–3:15pm, 8:30am–5:00pm, 10:00am–6:30pm, and 11:45am–8:15pm. Caregivers also participate in a rotating weekend schedule approximately every 8th–9th weekend and a holiday rotation approximately once every three years. 

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Provide distributive pharmacy services, assistance and support for the pharmacist in an ambulatory/outpatient setting.  
  • Prepare prescription orders for dispensing to patients.  
  • Maintain inventory for the outpatient pharmacy.  
  • Assist with extemporaneous compounding of prescriptions and bulk compounding of prescriptions and over the counter items.  
  • Operate the point-of-sale cash register system.  
  • Monitor and act on reorder points, restock prescription and non-prescription area and remove expiring products.  
  • Provide multi-pharmacy support in assigned areas as needed.  

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • High School Diploma/GED   

Must meet all of the following license and certification combination requirements at the time of application:

  • Must hold an active registration as a Registered Pharmacy Technician through the Ohio Board of Pharmacy (OBOP).

  • It is required, within 18 months from the date of hire: Must obtain a national certification as a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the National Healthcare Association (NHA)  AND Registration as a Certified Pharmacy Technician with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • Six months of hospital experience  
  • Completion of a formal pharmacy technician training program
