About the role

Hendrick Technical Solutions

Location: 4400 Papa Joe Hendrick Blvd, Charlotte, North Carolina 28262

Hendrick Technical Solutions is a dynamic and growing force within the defense industry. We are seeking an Electrical Engineering Intern to contribute to the development of cutting-edge Unmanned Vehicles (UXVs) and next-generation electro-mechanical equipment.

This role operates in a fast-paced, mission-critical environment focused on challenging, high-impact projects that directly enhance national security. The engineer will join a collaborative team helping redefine the future of defense robotics, combining the agility and innovation of a startup with the stability, proven culture, and established resources of Hendrick.

What You'll Do:

Design & Development Support:

  • Support the design, development, and integration of robust mechatronic systems for our UGV platforms and robotic prototypes under guidance from senior engineers.

Testing:

  • Assist senior engineers with structured testing and documentation, performing functional testing of platforms both on benchtop and in the field.

Electrical Systems & PCB Assembly:

  • Assist with electrical design, troubleshooting, PCB assembly, and hands-on hardware support.
  • Work directly with electrical components, including schematic/layout review support as appropriate, component research/sourcing, soldering, board bring-up, rework, cable and harness support, power system integration, connectorization, and bench testing.
  • Support microcontroller integration and practical debugging of assembled hardware.

Hands-On Engineering Support:

  • Support senior engineers during hardware builds, integration, troubleshooting, and test activities.
  • Assist with assembling prototype hardware, preparing test setups, documenting results, and resolving practical electrical or electro-mechanical issues on the bench and on UGV platforms.

Problem Solving & Refinement:

  • Apply a thorough approach to identify and solve technical challenges, ask great questions, and continuously seek ways to refine and improve designs beyond initial specifications.

Collaboration & Communication:

  • Work as a trusted partner within multidisciplinary teams, effectively communicating technical information, and producing high-quality, professional written work.

Required Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, robotics, or a closely related technical field (junior/senior preferred), or recently graduated and seeking an internship experience.
  • Hands-on project experience (coursework, lab, personal projects, internships, or student teams) in electrical engineering, mechatronics, robotics, or embedded systems.
  • Required hands-on PCB assembly experience, including soldering, component placement, board bring-up, rework, and basic electronics troubleshooting.
  • Strong understanding of electrical engineering fundamentals, such as basic schematic reading, component selection, microcontroller basics, and power management concepts including DC power systems, voltage steps, wire sizing, and connectors.
  • Exposure to basic sensor integration and troubleshooting (through coursework or projects).
  • Very thorough in approach, consistently finding ways to refine designs and improve outcomes. Demonstrates calmness under pressure and a practical, solutions-oriented mindset.
  • Genuinely interested in learning and contributing to defense robotics. Produces high-quality, professional written work.
  • A team player. Must work well with teammates shoulder-to-shoulder daily, collaborating and forming strong internal relationships. Leverages strong team culture to overcome obstacles and succeed.
  • Ability to represent Hendrick Technical Solutions well in all interactions.

Bonus Skills & Knowledge:

  • Interest in and/or exposure to CAN bus systems.
  • Understanding of networking concepts in a robotics context, including IP layers.
  • Interest in the defense industry and/or military robotics (prior experience is a plus but not required).
  • Experience developing and testing robotic or embedded systems in environments where reliability matters (student teams, labs, or internships).

This role is subject to International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) requirements and as such, U.S. Citizen, Permanent Resident, or U.S. Person Status required.
