SSM is looking for an experienced technician to join our pharmacy team at St. Mary's Hospital in Madison, WI.

Primary Location: WI-SSM Health St. Mary's Hospital - Madison
Department: Inpatient Pharmacy 
Schedule: Full Time, 35 hours per week
Shift: 7 on/off, Nights, 2100-0700 / 9:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.

Differential: Weekend and Nights

Job Summary:

Under the direct supervision of a pharmacist and in accordance with standard procedures, performs a full range of pharmacy technician duties, including transcription, preparation of non-sterile and sterile medications, dispensing, delivery, use of automation systems, auditing, and maintenance of documentation and records. This position serves as a departmental resource, addressing complex issues and providing training and guidance to technicians and students. This role may support and help coordinate daily pharmacy operations.

Job Responsibilities and Requirements:

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists in the preparation of medication orders that may include transcription, workflow management, automation utilization, and medication readiness for checking, dispensing, and delivery.  Completes complex non-sterile and/or sterile compounding of medications. Solves issues with medication preparation including those with automation and compounding. Identifies opportunities for improvement in medication preparation processes.
  • Distributes medications to designated areas and returns unused, discontinued, or damaged doses to the pharmacy. Utilizes automation to ensure medications are secured and in-date in their area of use. Ensures safety and efficiency in medication delivery.
  • Supports inventory management activities that include receipt, storage, security, and inspection. Ensures that inventory areas are clean, and that inventory is rotated, in-date and properly labeled. Identifies opportunities for improvement in the inventory management process.
  • Adheres to regulatory requirements and quality assurance standards. Completes all documentation and maintains records in compliance with standard procedures. Promotes a safe practice environment and reports situations that may lead to safety events in addition to safety events that occur.  Identifies and communicates action steps that should be taken to improve department safety.
  • Provides excellent customer service to patients, other staff and ancillary departments and maintains high standards of confidentiality in accordance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
  • Conducts reviews and audits, as assigned, to identify gaps in workflows, regulatory compliance, and safety. Reports findings and helps identify action plans to close gaps.
  • Maintains proficiency in at least ten documented pharmacy competencies in at least three competency categories. Can teach competencies skills to others including technicians, students, and pharmacists.
  • Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 


EDUCATION

  • High School Diploma/GED or education equivalency for licensing.  


EXPERIENCE

  • Two years’ experience as a pharmacy technician 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Frequent lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 0-25 lbs.
  • Frequent sitting, standing, walking, reaching and repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements.
  • Frequent use of vision and depth perception for distances near (20 inches or less) and far (20 feet or more) and to identify and distinguish colors.
  • Frequent use of hearing and speech to share information through oral communication. Ability to hear alarms, malfunctioning machinery, etc.
  • Frequent keyboard use/data entry.
  • Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting and gripping.
  • Occasional lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 25-50 lbs.
  • Rare climbing.

REQUIRED PROFESSIONAL LICENSE AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS 
 
Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) - Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB)
Or
Certified Pharmacy Technician (ExCPT/CPhT) - National Healthcareer Association (NHA)
