About the role

Summary

The Phlebotomist II is responsible for independently performing standard laboratory venipuncture and capillary collection procedures from assigned inpatients and outpatients, labeling the specimens completely and accurately, and transporting specimens to the appropriate location in the laboratory. Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision and Values.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Possesses sufficient knowledge, training, and experience to be capable of successfully performing venipuncture and capillary punctures without requiring support and instruction from others.
  • Proficient in use of basic office equipment and computers.
  • Ability to perform basic calculations such as needed to determine maximum blood collection.
  • Ability to communicate professionally with patients, families, associates and providers.
  • Ability to organize tasks and remain focused and productive in stressful situations.
  • Ability and willingness to prioritize patient care over personal needs/desires.
  • Demonstrates problem solving and decision making skills.
  • Ability to consistently work as part of a team, as well as independently.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Independently and correctly performs venipuncture and capillary collections without requiring support and instruction from others.
  • Accessions specimens into the computer and distributes to the appropriate department as required.
  • Ensures referral specimens are processed and stored appropriately to maintain acceptability for testing.
  • Participates in quality monitoring and evaluation and implements measures to ensure hospital, DNV, and other quality standards are met. 
  • Demonstrates initiative in identifying opportunities for self-development and enhancement of professional competency. 
  • Understands, supports and applies departmental/hospital policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Performs other job functions as assigned or requested.

Physical Requirements

  • The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.
  • Must have good balance and coordination.
  • The physical requirements of this position are: medium work - exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 25 lbs. of force frequently.
  • The Associate is required to have close visual acuity including color, depth perception, and field of vision to perform an activity, such as assessing patients, preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading.
  • Frequent invasive and non-invasive patient contact.
  • Exposure to patient body fluids as well as exposure to hazardous or poisonous materials.
  • Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.
