WILDLIFE INTERN - (2 INTERNSHIPS)

Job Summary:

The Arizona Game and Fish Department offers paid internship opportunities to current students, graduate and undergraduate. Recent (within the past year) graduates are also eligible to apply. This is an excellent opportunity for students interested in gaining hands-on practical work experience while working with a diverse group of professionals in the fields of wildlife science, biological science, wildlife management, and many other professions within the Department.

Student interns are hired on a temporary basis and paid an hourly rate of $16.50. Interns are not benefit eligible and work at the discretion of the appointing authority. Interns may be employed through their approved assignment or the department determines that the work is no longer required. Assignments are typically full-time unless indicated by the hiring supervisor.

Job Duties:

The Wildlife Intern will assist biologists on crew projects, across various locations in Arizona. Intern work may include a combination of the following priority projects: conducting sensitive plant species surveys and monitoring near Flagstaff and Tucson; building retainer wall and planting native vegetation for pollinator garden in Flagstaff; and building jack fencing in remote areas in Kingman. Other work assignments may include multi-species bird surveys near Flagstaff; species-specific bird surveys in various parts of Arizona; box turtle surveys in southeastern Arizona. Interns may assist with other botany and/or fauna projects and computer data entry as needed. Specific training in botany and fauna identification and field methodologies will be provided for projects. Intern will need ability to hike and camp in rugged and sometimes remote mountain and desert terrain; work for extended periods of time, up to eight days at a time on some occasions; work in extreme temperatures (hot and cold); operate a 4x4 vehicle. The internship is a temporary, full time internship. The position will be based out of the Flagstaff region and set to run through 06/15/2025. This position may be extended to 09/30/2025 if additional project needs arise. A post-offer physical exam will be required for this position. Required/Preferred skills: Candidate must have strong work ethic, be detail oriented, have good communication skills, and a positive attitude. Basic navigational skills, camping experience. Botany and bird identification skills would be beneficial.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

Currently enrolled in or a recent graduate of curriculum leading towards a Bachelor’s or higher level degree on a full time basis (usually 12 semester hours) and pursuing a major in Wildlife Biology or closely related field applicable to the internship opportunity (subject to verification)
