Job Summary:

Entry level Public Safety opportunities available for service minded individuals interested in facilitating a safe and secure environment for the students, faculty, and staff who live, learn and work at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

The Public Safety Officer I is responsible for the detection and prevention of crime, for the protection of persons, property and the general maintenance of peace, order and security; duties include patrol, crowd control, traffic control and dispatching.

Minimum Qualifications:

Public Safety Officer I  QUALIFICATIONS

  • Requires the completion of some college post-high school or comparable military service
  • Must possess and maintain a valid US driver’s license
  • FBI fingerprint review for consideration for access to a restricted nuclear facility per NRC requirements
  • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a NYS Security Guard License within six (6) months of hire.  Requirements for this license include
    • A NYS Department of State review of all past criminal convictions
    • Being current with any child support orders
  • CPR and AED certification must be completed within three months of hire
  • Must be available for flexible shift scheduling
  • All Public Safety Officer I incumbents must successfully complete Rensselaer’s Field Officer Training Program within four (4) months of hire
  • Subject to criminal history check, background investigation and physical examination

Note: Five (5) years of any combination of safety, security, law enforcement or other related experience may be substituted for college credits

 

Public Safety Officer II QUALIFICATIONS

  • Requires 60 credits from an accredited college, or 30 credits and qualifying military service
  • Must have completed NYS Certified Public Safety Officer Course or equivalent (or higher training) approved by Department of Criminal Justice Services and Rensselaer County Sheriff.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid New York State driver’s license. Completion of NYS defensive driving course required within 30 days of hire.
  • FBI fingerprint review for consideration for access to a restricted nuclear facility per NRC requirements
  • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a NYS Security Guard License within six (6) months of hire.  Requirements for this license include
    • A NYS Department of State review of all past criminal convictions

  • Demonstrated ability to apply critical thinking skills
  • Must possess the ability to assess a situation and apply appropriate conflict resolution techniques
  • Ability to use crisis intervention techniques
  • Ability to use relevant personal and/or mobile computing technology
  • Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Requires ability to handle multiple emergency situations
  • Requires excellent customer relations skills and the ability to deal effectively with a diverse population in an academic setting

Preferred Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities

• Knowledge of computerized emergency and data base systems

Shift

Public Safety: Various Shifts.  All members of the Department of Public Safety must be available for flexible shift scheduling Including:

  • 3rd shift 11:00 PM - 7:00 AM 
  • 2nd Shift 3:00 PM - 11:00 PM
  • 1st Shift 7:00 AM - 3:00 PM

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week / 80 hours per pay period) within a 24-hour department, which requires avail
