About the Unit
Lead a high-volume, high-acuity surgical services department within a Level II Trauma Center featuring:

  • 27 operating rooms at Main Campus and a Surgery Center
  • Dedicated vascular lab and cystoscopy suite

This department supports a broad and complex surgical case mix, including:

  • General Surgery (with da Vinci and SP robotic and bariatric programs)
  • Neurosurgery
  • Orthopedics
  • ENT
  • Urology
  • Cardiac and Vascular
  • Gynecology
  • Plastics

As Clinical Nurse Manager, you will oversee a fast-paced perioperative environment with advanced technology, diverse specialties, and strong interdisciplinary collaboration.

Operations

You will play a key role in:

  • Ensuring appropriate staffing levels and skill mix to support safe, and efficient patient care
  • Managing OR scheduling and staff productivity to support efficient daily operations
  • Foster a positive and trusting culture that promotes engagement
  • Mentoring and developing emerging leaders, building leadership capability and succession within the department
  • Leading and supporting change initiatives to improve workflow, efficiency, and patient outcomes

Scope of work

The Clinical Nurse Manager is an experienced leader responsible for the overall management of assigned units and services. This role provides leadership and oversight of patient care staff to support a culture of excellence in clinical practice, staff engagement, recruitment and retention, and strong clinical and operational outcomes.

The Nurse Manager ensures the safe and effective delivery of patient care while maintaining compliance with all regulatory, administrative, and clinical standards, as well as organizational policies and procedures. Serving as a key advocate for safety and retention, the Nurse Manager leverages data, technology, and evidence-based practices to drive decision-making and proactively mitigate risk.

This role fosters a desirable and supportive work environment that enables staff and the organization to meet or exceed strategic goals. The Nurse Manager models effective communication and collaboration with physicians, staff, patients, and interdisciplinary partners. Role-specific responsibilities and competencies align with the organization’s Professional Practice Model.

The position reports to the Director of Nursing or above.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:
Under general direction, the Clinical Nurse Manager maintains 24-hour accountability for leadership and management of a designated patient care unit. Responsibilities include promoting high-quality nursing care, cost-effective resource utilization, staff professional development, and a Patient- and Family-Centered Care culture.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Required
  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) Preferred
  • Minimum of three (3) years of clinical nursing experience Required
  • Two years of demonstrated informal leadership experience for internal candidates, which may include roles such as Charge Nurse, Lead Nurse, or participation in Shared Governance Councils Required
  • MI Registered Nurse (RN) license Required
  • AHA or ARC Basic Life Support (BLS) certification Required
  • AHA Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification Required
  • One year of formal nursing leadership experience (external candidates) Required
