Diagnostic Medical Sonographers use imaging devices that emit sound waves to create the image that will help physicians assess and diagnose various conditions. There are different kinds of imaging devices, this includes ultrasounds, sonograms, and echocardiograms. Generally sonographic imaging devices use a handheld probe, which is moved over the area being surveyed to create a two-dimensional or three-dimensional image. These devices can be used for therapy, diagnosis, and even to guide interventional procedures like biopsies or draining fluid collections.
A caregiver in this position works variable shifts, 8:00AM – 4:30PM.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
Perform diagnostic sonographic imaging through the application of non-ionizing, high-frequency sound waves for patients of all ages.
Perform ultrasound studies (i.e. obstetrical, GYN, abdominal, retro peritoneal, small parts, pediatric, and vascular).
Consult with referring physicians regarding patients' medical history and selection of appropriate procedures and equipment required for proper diagnosis.
Review charts, previous reports and requisition prior to the exam.
Educate patients regarding procedures, equipment and exams to ensure understanding and cooperation.
Ensure patients' comfort and safety during and after the exam.
Assist with scheduling of patients and schedule all emergency patients for diagnostic ultrasound procedures.
Monitor all appointments scheduled for ultrasound examinations.
Perform preliminary research on patients when preparations are not provided and determine priority of patients based on the daily schedules.
Acquire, archive, transmit and print images via PACS.
Complete after hours transmission of images and appropriate paperwork.
Immediately report any malf
