Job Description

The Pre-Operative Clinic at Northwestern Memorial Hospital is a hospital outpatient department within Surgical Services. Our focus in the PreOp Clinic is to optimize patients to safely undergo anesthesia and to provide patients with a clear understanding of what to expect on the day of surgery. 

Our nurses’ primary responsibilities are the following:

• Manage anemia clinic and administer iron infusions for Preop Clinic, OB, Cardio-thoracic, and Internal Medicine patients;
• Provide phone screening for patients undergoing cataract surgery and GI Colonoscopy procedures;
• Screen patients for Penicillin Allergy Challenge and assist in the administration of challenge;
• Assist in follow-up for patients seen by our Advanced Practice Providers in clinic;
• Serve in Charge Role, supporting overall clinic needs.

Candidates must have at least two years of nursing work experience in order to be considered for this position. Strong IV skills preferred for anemia clinic.

• Schedule: 4 10-hour shifts per week with a rotating day off, no weekends, no call, no holidays.
• Experience: only RNs with at least two years of work experience will be considered; we cannot accept new graduate RNs in this role

Based on the NMH framework for practice, the registered professional clinical nurse (RN) is accountable and responsible for the provision and coordination of clinically competent, evidence-based care for an assigned group of patients that includes diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation and evaluation. The nurse adheres to the ANA Scope and Standards of Professional Nursing, the Code of Ethics, and the Nursing Social Policy Statement.   As a member of the clinical care and unit team, the RN participates in decision-making, teaching, mentoring, and collaboration with the multidisciplinary team to advance the patient plan of care, achieve exceptional outcomes and enhance unit operations.  The RN exemplifies the components of what it means to be an NMH nurse, reflects the Mission, Vision, and Values of Northwestern Memorial, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.
