About the role

Intern, Sustainable Solutions Climate Science Center Education Initiative

If you think you have what it takes but don't necessarily meet every single point listed below, please apply - you could be exactly who we are looking for!

Position Summary

The Pole Creek Fund is interested in supporting the development and implementation of an interactive museum exhibit highlighting climate change solutions, at least through the pilot stage, and if it is useful and well-received, to seek funding to expand it to more science centers and perhaps other audiences.

We are currently at the very early stages of due diligence and seeking a GPS summer intern to join us in for a 10-week internship that will incorporate conducting initial research and outreach to key Science Museums across the nation to inform the design and implementation of the program and advance this initiative.

See below for additional scope of work information.

This is a nonexempt position and is available on a fully remote basis within the United States.

Problem Statement

There is an increasingly broad science-based understanding of the causes and challenges associated with climate change.  Unfortunately, there is not a similar pragmatic, science-based understanding of possible solutions, which fuels a high level of pessimism. This lack of pro-science pragmatism is not just limited to the general public, but also appears to be deeply embedded in many mainstream environmental groups.  We believe there is an urgent need to promote better understanding of the science behind the various climate solutions, the progress being made, and the role available solutions can play in stopping climate change in our lifetime.

To make a small contribution to this challenge, we would seek to develop an interactive science museum exhibit based on climate solutions, permitting visitors to develop a better understanding of the portfolio of possible solutions, progress to date and interactively experiment with outcomes of hypothetical future states.  We would hope to pilot this idea by building a collaboration between 4-6 science centers (e.g. Pacific Science Center; Boston Museum of Science; Wellcome Collection) and technical experts and content creators.  We would hope that this exhibit would have some sort of game-like solution simulator firmly based in the best science permitting visitors to learn by playing.  With permission from the author, a possible framework for the content and organization of this exhibit is well described in Chapters 2 –5 of Hannah Ritchie’s excellent new book:  “Not the End of the World.”
