About the role

Job Summary

This position runs from April through September, and will assist with field work, lab work, and data management in support of the Fisheries Department in the Patrick Center for Environmental Research at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia. This position requires in-person work. Office days will be at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia. Office days are generally 8-4 PM. Field days include day trips and overnight trips. Field days may include extended hours and are generally 6:30-4:30 PM, with earlier starting times to accommodate tides. Current projects are focused in the Delaware River Basin, including boat electrofishing for migratory fish, sampling in wadeable streams and non-wadeable streams using seines and dip nets to assess endangered minnows.

Essential Functions

  • Assist with field work and lab work involving the assessment of fish and fish habitat.
  • Assist with data entry and data checking.
  • Assist with lab and equipment cleaning and maintenance.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of bachelor's degree or the equivalent combination of education and work experience. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience collecting fish in freshwater from a boat and by wading with the use of a variety of gears. State issued boat safety certificate or license
  • Ability to handle, measure, and identify various fish species
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access)
  • Comfortable working in the field with GPS units, water quality meters, and habitat assessment equipment
  • Comfortable working in remote locations
  • Good communicator and team player
  • Detail oriented

  • Lifting demands > 50lbs

Additional Information

This is a Part-Time temporary position classified as Non-Exempt. The offered pay is based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review.
