SA-TECH supports the Combatant Craft Division (CCD), a dynamic U.S. Navy Directorate specializing in design, research, development, testing, and evaluation of experimental watercraft for its DoD clients. We provide full spectrum Operations and Maintenance (O&M) support of various combatant craft, patrol boats, Special Operations Forces platforms and coastal craft, ensuring performance and fleet readiness.


SA-TECH is currently hiring a Heavy Vehicle and Mobile Equipment Service Technician for CCD at Naval Station Norfolk who will be responsible for the preventative maintenance, service, repair, troubleshooting, and testing of forklifts, trailers, and other mobile equipment (heavy equipment). The technician will troubleshoot equipment, check functionality of newly installed equipment and evaluate system performance under actual operating conditions. All work will be performed safely in accordance with industry standards and best practices.


The following job functions are basic requirements (but other duties may be assigned as well):

  • Inspecting and Diagnosing Equipment: Conduct thorough inspections of heavy equipment to identify potential issues and ensure proper functioning. You will utilize diagnostic tools and software to pinpoint problems with mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
  • Complete repair and maintenance: Repair or replace worn and damaged components, including engines, transmissions, brakes, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems. You will also perform routine maintenance tasks to include (but not limited to) oil changes, filter replacements, and lubrication to extend equipment lifespan and prevent breakdowns.
  • Troubleshoot complex issues: Diagnose and troubleshoot various problems with heavy equipment, often using specialized tools, means you must understand how different systems work together.
  • Operate and test equipment: you will be expected to operate and test equipment after repairs to ensure proper functioning and make any necessary adjustments.
  • Maintain accurate records: complete detailed paperwork and maintain accurate logs of all repairs, maintenance performed, and parts used.
  • Communicate with Stakeholders:  You must be able to communicate with equipment owners, operators, and colleagues to understand needs, explain repairs, provide recommendations, and ensure smooth operations.
  • Adhere to Safety Protocols: You must follow all safety protocols and adhere to regulations and procedures when working with heavy machinery. 

Work Conditions:

  • May be required to work first shift (0700-1530) or second shift (0830-1700).
  • Work will be performed inside and outside enclosed buildings and will include sitting, standing, walking, lifting, carrying, and reaching.
  • Position requires physical dexterity and strength as you will be working on large equipment.

Requirements

Education/Experience/Skills:

  

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent with post-secondary school certificate or associate's degree in a relevant field like diesel technology or heavy equipment mechanics preferred.
  • U.S. Navy, Coast Guard, OEM, or related trade school training preferred.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of heavy equipment repair experience (level of technician will depend on years of direct experience).
  • Demonstrated ability to read, write and follow technical directives correctly.
  • Highly desired/preferred additional skills include:
    • OEM Certifications highly desirable.
    • Familiarity with MTU, Cummins, Caterpillar, or Steyr Diesel Engines a plus.
    • CDL License with a clean driving record is also highly desired.
