Experian is looking for a team-oriented attorney for a dynamic in-house corporate counsel position. The position will provide legal support for Experian’s North American marketing services businesses with principal offices in New York City and Schaumburg, Illinois, however candidate may work remotely or in a hybrid role on Eastern or Central time.
As Corporate Counsel supporting Experian’s marketing services team, you will counsel and provide legal support to the business unit about various issues, with a primary focus on privacy. This includes advising on all relevant laws and regulations to ensure that Experian’s offerings are crafted, built, and maintained in a way that aligns with the emerging applicable privacy obligations in the US.
The right applicant will understand the need to balance excellent legal risk assessments with a proactive, business-friendly and technically sound approach. We are looking for someone who can understand and interact with the stakeholders across the organization while also having a command of the technical details against specific legislative requirements. This will include analyzing and advising the business as to the requirements and prospective impacts of state laws and regulations, and making recommendations to data privacy and compliance teams.
The role will also support the negotiation and drafting of strategic agreements, drafting standard commercial forms for contracts, conducting product regulatory reviews and risk assessment, and other priority business initiatives.
Specific experience in a relevant regulatory practice, particularly with 5+ years in privacy and digital marketing, will be a strong consideration. The successful candidate will demonstrate an ability to learn and adapt to the requirements of the role as the regulatory landscape in the US evolves, and be part of a dynamic team.
Job Description
- Lead privacy advisement in day-to-day and strategic commercial agreements for applicable privacy laws, industry organization codes, best practices, risk assessment, and diligence
- Advise on requirements and application of US privacy laws, regulations and enforcement trends
- Provide legal advice where necessary for the negotiation of data processing, data transfer, and other data protection agreements
- Act as supporting privacy attorney to product groups and business development team to advise on product development initiatives, or new partnerships
- Provide legal support to compliance teams for data processing risk assessments and other risk mitigation activities
- Manage and contribute to the preparation of records of processing, data mapping, and similar legal compliance exercises
- Act as a partner for other in-house counsels on all kinds of data protection matters.
- Collaborate with internal partners to respond to requests from regulators, law enforcement and customers.
Qualifications
- You have a law degree and at least 5+ years of experience working in a law firm and/or in-house legal department, preferably at a publisher, ad-tech, or marketing company focusing on privacy law and applicable impact
- You have experience of working in the privacy field; experience in handling matters involving issues relating to digital advertising, data security and advanced understanding of the digital landscape and related data collection and processing
- You have a consistent track record to deliver clear, concise, practical and pragmatic advice.
- You have the ability to work independently, and as a collaborative and active member of a congenial legal team and with non-legal professionals.
- You have excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Excellent analytical capabilities and good judgment
- You’re a self-starter and ability to take proactive ownership of required counsel to support business needs and see projects through to completion
- J.D. from a nationally recognized law school; admitted to practice in good standing with at least one U.S. state bar, in the location of practice
- Ability to work Eastern or Central Time hours on a regular basis
- Proficiency in English is essential, other languages a plus.
