Pay Range

$262,410 - $332,772 Annually

Job Description

The National Security Engineering Division (NSED) in Engineering has an opening for a Section Leader for the Electromagnetics Section (EMS). The EMS provides core capabilities in pulsed power, accelerator development and operations, and related technologies. You will have key technical and administrative management responsibilities for the EMS, and provide leadership in the section’s technical areas. You will work with Engineering management, program leaders in Strategic Deterrence, Global Security, NIF & Photon Science, and Physical and Life Sciences to deliver critical mission support and develop new business opportunities. This position reports to the NSED Deputy Division Leader and is within the Engineering Directorate.

You will 

  • Lead teams, programs, or functions with a technical focus, operate under broad consultative direction with significant autonomy, use expert knowledge and extensive team leadership experience, and exercise judgement within established policies to monitor workflow, allocate resources, ensure timely completion of projects, and influence and direct high level strategic plans to achieve objectives while managing organizational and operational impact and attaining long range goals.
  • Formulate, execute, and refine short-term and long-term strategic goals for the Section and Division, working as a member of the division’s engineering management team.
  • Lead the EMS management team of Group Leaders in carrying out the day-to-day management tasks of the section.  These include supporting the Division in policy development, resource allocation, hiring plans, capital equipment plans, overseeing budgeting, and serving as the primary contact between NSED Management and the section members.
  • Influence strategic technical decisions and serve as technical leader in planning and promoting technical development in new technology areas important to developing current and future business, collaborating with potential customers to assess needs, and developing partnering relationships with appropriate project/group leaders.
  • Develop strategies to position the organization for new business opportunities through vetting and reviewing new proposals for funded work and securing funding for innovative technologies, including Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD), Strategic Partnership Projects (SPP) and programmatic needs.
  • Champion, develop and apply disciplined engineering, quality management, and project management best practices in support of the Section’s customers.
  • Champion the organization in setting and attaining the highest standards of design, personnel and facility safety.
  • Write annual employee appraisals for direct reports, participate in performance and salary management activities, and promote career development, mentoring, and technical guidance for section members.
  • Responsible for the oversight and personal commitment to the goals of Integrated Safety Management, Integrated Safeguards and Security Management, and compliance with all ES&H regulations and institutional best-practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at time of hire. Also, you must have the ability to obtain and maintain Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) access. Please note that your current active Q or Top Secret clearance with DOE or another agency does not guarantee DOE SCI access approval; if you are denied access, you may be subject to reinvestigation of your existing Q or Top Secret clearance.
