Job Description
The Department of Chemistry at the University of Nevada, Reno is seeking applications for a Staff Research Associate 3 position supporting the Department research and instructional activities by overseeing the retail operations of the Department operated Chemstore stockroom. This position will report to the Director of Laboratories and will be responsible for purchasing stock and maintaining inventory by processing orders placed by chemistry faculty, researchers and staff; tracking incoming shipments and verifying accuracy of products delivered; maintaining stock of commonly used supplies; and ensuring common solvents are regularly available and continuously work with faculty to determine what supplies, chemicals and equipment are needed.
This position is responsible for fiscal management and maintenance of the stockroom’s financials by logging purchases and sales in accordance with University policies and procedures; coordinate with the department business manager on all intra- and interdepartmental purchases; ensure correct prices are given online and at the time of purchase and providing customers with a receipt at the time of purchase; strictly follow markup (recharge) rates as approved by the University; and operate without a loss or a profit at the end of the fiscal year.
This role will ensure the stockroom is open and personnel are available during the posted or instructional hours and provide prompt and courteous service to students, researchers, faculty and outside parties. This position will also train and supervise student employees in stockroom operations, verify that student employees have completed safety trainings; directs the work of student staff to ensure job tasks are completed safely, correctly and on time; maintain contact with student staff to ensure smooth operations of labs and stockroom; and maintain current working knowledge of university safety procedures, supervisory best practices and rules. This position will provide stockroom backup coverage in other Chemistry stockrooms as needed and maintain safe laboratory work practices by overseeing the storage of chemicals, supplies, and equipment per the University Chemical Hygiene Plan and manage the stockroom standard operating procedures (SOPs) and prepare new SOPs as needed in consultation with the Director of Laboratories.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in the required area of specialization and two (2) years of professional research experience either in the field or in a laboratory; OR
One (1) year of experience as a Staff Research Associate II in Nevada State service; OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.

Experience with retail point-of-sale systems and financial reporting
Supervisory experience
Knowledge of OSHA Laboratory Standards
Schedule
The typical work schedule is 40 hours, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday, with the potential to be requested to work late evenings to cover instructional stockrooms during Fall and Spring semesters (~15 weeks per semester). This is subject to change based on organizational needs.
Compensation Grade
Grade 33
