GSKAbout the role
A career in Boston – main video (youtube.com)
Associate Scientist, Cell Line Development and Early In-Process Analytics, Mammalian Expression Technology CoE
At GSK, we have bold ambitions for patients, aiming to positively impact the health of 2.5 billion people by the end of the decade. R&D is committed to discovering and delivering transformational vaccines and medicines to prevent and change the course of disease.
We believe the Greater Boston area is an important hub for the biotech and pharma industry, which is why we’ve invested in growing our footprint and expanding our R&D space in Cambridge, with a primary focus on additional state-of-the-art lab space. Here, we will bring together talent and expertise, building upon GSK’s long history of vaccine development, to create globally leading viral capabilities and cutting-edge vaccines technologies, as we add to our robust portfolio targeting infectious diseases at every stage of life.
In the plan to create a new hub for mRNA-based vaccine discovery and recombinant protein vaccine early development in Cambridge, we are building new laboratories that will be focused on the development of state-of-the-art methods that will be supporting deep product understanding, process and product development, as well as testing of pre-clinical and clinical samples for new mRNA and CHO protein-based vaccines.
Situated in Cambridge-based hub, Mammalian Expression Technology Center of Excellence (MET CoE), Technical Research & Development, GSK Vaccines R&D is responsible for the development of CHO based production cell lines, next-gen cell line engineering, and baseline upstream process for innovative recombinant protein/adjuvanted vaccine projects and platforms.
Key Responsibilities:
- Hands-on development and execution of state-of-art cell line development workflow to generate pre-GMP-grade cell lines for commercial manufacture of recombinant protein vaccine products.
- Hands-on development and execution of state-of-art in-process immuno- and nucleic acid based analytic toolbox to support cell line development.
- Key contributor to support project documentation and CMC regulatory submissions (including raw material control section and cell line derivation report) as well as related lab inventory management.
The successful applicant may spend 3-6 months within the first year of hire in Rockville, MD to support and guarantee a smooth transition of methods and know-how to the new laboratories in Cambridge, MA.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree with 4+ years, or Master with 2+ years in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Bioengineering, or a related scientific field.
- Two or more years of experience with aseptic mammalian (CHO cell preferred) cell line development, especially single cell isolation, derivation, suspension cell culture at small scales ranging including 96 well-plate, 24 well-plate and shake flask formats
- Two or more years of hands-on experience with high-throughput, robotic cell line screening tools or any equivalent automation systems.
- Two or more years of experience in GLP environment with Good Documentation Practices.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Operational knowledge with common nucleic acid- and protein-based analytic assays (including PCR, Luminex and Octet) for early product quantity and quality assessment to support cell line selection.
- Operational knowledge with high-throughput small scale bioreactors (E.g. AMBR and 2-3L SUB) and metabolite analysers (Cedex and Novaflex2)
- Understanding of drug substance CMC process development space as it is related to cell line development for complex biological and vaccine products.
