Scope of Position
We are seeking an Optical Finishing Process Engineer to join our team and contribute to the development and manufacture of advanced optical systems. In this role, you will focus on creating and refining processes and procedures for the final finishing of complex optical components made of metals, plastics, and crystals. Utilizing deterministic polishing tools, you will support aerospace and defense (A&D) sensor systems by defining, developing and improving processes to finish components to meet strict specifications for figure, finish, and mid-spatial frequencies. Your work will also involve the use of advanced metrology tools, including interferometers, computer-generated holograms, and custom optical testing setups.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide SME level engineering expertise and leadership for fundamental understanding of manufacturing issues and process technologies within work area including generation and finishing of optics.
- Use rigorous processes and technical knowledge to build detailed technical understanding for key process steps and improvements.
- Develop mechanical solutions and process changes to control and eliminate manufacturing issues.
- Lead and/or support projects involving process development, capability improvement, and cost reduction in support of division engineering programs.
- Apply knowledge of engineering principals and methods to resolve challenges.
Experiences/Education - Required
- Bachelor’s degree required, preferrably in an engineering field
- Minimum of 5 years' experience in advanced optical component fabrication and testing.
- Minimum of 3 years' experience with deterministic, corrective finishing techniques for aspheric and freeform components.
- Significant experience in conventional polishing techniques for glass, infrared (IR), and metal materials, including knowledge of polishing slurries and cloths.
- Experience working with metrology tools, such as interferometers, non-contact metrology systems (e.g., Luphoscan or Ultrasurf), computer-generated holograms, and other optical measurement systems.
- Strong understanding of design of experiments (DOE) for process problem solving and improvement with practical knowledge of statistics and statistical methods.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively at all organizational levels, from technicians to senior leadership.
- Advanced mathematical skills.
Experiences/Education - Desired
- Knowledge of optical surface geometry, particularly in relation to freeform surfaces.
- Experience with multiple optical substrate materials, finished optics handling and cleaning, and final inspection processes.
- Familiarity with CNC diamond turning machines,
