The Chief of Staff is a critical position supporting senior leadership, enabling leaders to execute strategic work while ensuring operational precision. The Chief of Staff is responsible for developing, implementing, and sustaining four strategic areas: strategy, operational excellence, communications, and organizational capability. They are expected to partner with horizontal and local teams to ensure clarity and discipline, connecting day-to-day work to the larger goals of the organization.
Candidates should have a passion for technology, an engaging executive presence, and exceptionally strong written and verbal communication skills. We are looking for experts in relationship-building who can manage multiple high-stakes projects simultaneously. Candidates should be driven by a desire to improve the daily lives and development of our associates while helping leaders advance strategy at scale.
What You’ll Do:
Lead the development and implementation of short- and long-term strategic programs for the organization in partnership with key stakeholders
Deeply understand the prioritization and delivery roadmap, identifying dependencies to proactively manage impediments
Influence matrixed stakeholder teams to move the organization forward in a well-integrated manner
Drive organizational processes that enable scale and success
Collaborate with Communications partners to amplify our organizational narrative and showcase the impact of strategic initiatives
Evaluate the feasibility of new projects and develop comprehensive implementation plans
Champion dissenting or unpopular ideas, even when engaging with senior leaders
Synthesize complex topics quickly and navigate the organization with agility
Drive organizational change and operational excellence
Serve as a trusted advisor to stakeholders and leaders across the enterprise
Exercise strong business judgment, influencing skills, and unwavering integrity
Foster a culture of open exchange and collaboration
Leverage expert facilitation, negotiation, and mediation skills
Maintain meticulous organizational standards and consistent follow-through
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree
At least 6 years of experience in Project Management, Process Management, or Program Management
At least 3 years of experience working with senior stakeholders across different business functions
At least 3 years of experience writing communications and presentations for leadership and non-leadership audiences
At least 3 years of experience leading technology delivery projects
Preferred Qualifications:
6+ years of experience driving organizational change and operational excellence
5+ years of experience in strategy development
5+ years of experience in budgeting and labor strategy

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.
McLean, VA: $200,700 - $229,100 for Chief of Staff
Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate’s offer letter.
