POSITION SUMMARY:

The Health & Welfare Plans Manager supports the administration of the Marathon Petroleum’s Health & Welfare and related benefit plans by carrying out day-to-day operational activities and ensuring processes are completed accurately and in accordance with plan provisions, regulations, and applicable laws.  The position works closely with internal partners and third-party service providers to support operations, reporting, and audit activities. In addition to supervisory responsibilities, this role provides data, documentation, and general support to internal and external stakeholders to assist with special projects and ongoing initiatives.   

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Leads the team of professionals who support health and welfare plans, which includes coaching, developing goals, assigning responsibilities, ensuring administrative efficiency, career development, and performance management.

  • Ensures efficient and effective administration of health and welfare benefit programs. Manages relationships to ensure vendors provide MPC with the highest level of customer service, accuracy and efficiency.

  • Ensures benefit plan compliance with Federal, state and local laws and regulations (ERISA, IRS, DOL, etc.).

  • Monitors competitive benefit plan trends and regulatory changes. Makes recommendations to ensure competitive and effective programs.

  • Works with Corporate Communications and third-party partners to develop and ensure accurate and timely communications to employees regarding benefits.

  • Coordinates the development, review and updating of formal plan documents for MPC benefit plans, programs and policies.

  • Analyzes benefit plans, policies and agreements during due diligence, merger and acquisition activities.

  • Provides guidance on various benefit claim appeals, including health and disability.

  • Develops and maintains the policies and procedures required by the HIPAA Privacy and Security Rules.

  • Collaborates with HR Business Partners, HR Centers of Excellence team members, and organization leaders to provide plan design, administration and communication that supports business needs and priorities.

  • Monitors budget and expenses related to health and welfare benefit plans.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree is required. Majors in Accounting, Human Resources, or related field are preferred.

  • Eight (8) or more years of experience in benefits, accounting, or an area of total rewards required.

SKILLS:

  • Ability to lead, coach, develop, and ensure efficiency of a high-performing team

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively to meet organization needs and goals.

  • Strong time management, written communication and organizational skills; attention-to-detail, analytical and team oriented.
