About the role

Project Kuiper is an initiative to launch a constellation of Low Earth Orbit satellites that will provide low-latency, high-speed broadband connectivity to unserved and underserved communities around the world.

As a Manufacturing Engineer at Project Kuiper, you will be directly responsible for building, testing, qualifying and producing next generation spacecraft. You will utilize innovative solutions and cutting-edge technology to solve difficult manufacturing and engineering problems on a daily basis, at both a systems and specialized level. You will be a critical lynchpin between the production, development, tooling, supply chain and quality teams, and lead production on the assembly line as well as new production introduction. You will provide vital manufacturability input to the design engineering teams for both new and existing hardware. Finally, you will be responsible for standing up new processes, equipment, and assembly lines to support Kuiper’s aggressive build ramp, making data-driven decisions at each step in the process.

Key job responsibilities
- Use knowledge and experience in understanding, collaborating, and trading complex inputs from multiple other disciplines (Electrical, RF, Optics, Thermal, Dynamics, Mechanisms, Materials, Tooling, Assembly, and Test) to guide the team and arrive at a viable approach for an optical system.
- Material flow planning and manufacturing process definition build, inspection & test.
- Develop manufacturing processes for automated quality SPC.
- Specify and procure various assembly equipment and systems to meet program development requirements
- Interface with facilities personnel in site development and all utility requirements definition.
- AIT takt time & cost optimization planning
- DFM review and sign off for design release

Export Control Requirement:
Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

A day in the life
This role will require a thorough understanding of precision manufacturing processes. You will own manufacturing processes for transitioning into a production environment. This is a hands-on role for a highly collaborative individual that combines superb technical and analytical capabilities to optimizing optic assembly procedures for production and meeting cross discipline requirements.

Basic Qualifications


- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (Manufacturing/Mechanical/Aerospace/Industrial/Electrical) or Physics or related discipline, or equivalent experience.
- 3+ years of experience Cleanroom operation and techniques.
- 5+ years of experience with any of the following - free-space optics, lasers, detectors, modulators, optical fiber and devices, Optic testing and device characterization.
- 5+ years of experience in the development of processes for manufacturing of complex opto-mechanical systems used in industrial, automotive, defense, space or medical applications.

Preferred Qualifications

- Demonstrated experience in planning and standing up manufacturing operations.
- 7+ years of experience in development and implementation of operations control documentation processes.
- Technical leadership role in new product implementation (NPI) and associated process to transition to manufacturing.
- Formal training/certification in Operational Excellence Systems (Lean, 5S, Six Sigma, etc.) a plus.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $114,300/year in our lowest geographic market up to $213,600/year in our highest geographic market.
