Job Summary
Within one of the nation’s most transformative universities, SJSU’s Student Wellness Center (SWC) fosters student opportunity in a revolutionary way by preparing students to maintain lifelong health and well-being. As part of the Student Wellness Center, Health Services provides a variety of medical services, which is similar to outpatient care provided in a physician’s group practice. These services include primary and urgent/acute care, evaluation, treatment and guidance for individual health problems, family planning services, public health prevention programs, and health education. In addition, the Student Wellness Center provides limited initial care for work injuries of employees, and, if necessary, assists in referring such persons for ongoing care. Reporting to the Clinic Manager, the Registered Nurse performs a variety of medical services for students at the Student Wellness Center under the general supervision. They work according to established protocols to provide direct nursing care for registered students, limited care for work-related injuries of university employees and limited first aid for campus visitors. Working collaboratively to support student success is the bottom line purpose of this and all Student Wellness Center positions.
Key Responsibilities
- Triage under protocol direction and with occasional direction from the Clinic Manager
- Take vital signs and record pertinent symptoms of patients
- Obtain a brief medical history on patients seen at the Wellness Center
- Make appropriate entries in patients’ electronic medical records
- Administer immunizations, TB tests, and certain medications under the guidelines of standardized procedures
- Order x-rays and lab work (as needed) according to the provider or standard order
- Prepare and assist patients for health examinations
- Assist medical providers with procedures and give treatment as ordered, including IV therapy, SQ/IM injections, and oral medications
- Provide support to Medical Assistants, in alignment with the appropriate standing orders and licensure
- Serve as charge nurse, if designated, in the absence of the Clinic Manager and assist the Clinic Manager in training new employees and orienting them to the clinic, which requested
- Cooperatively participate in staff meetings, in-service training, division and campus events, meetings, and projects as appropriate
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of general methods, procedures, and practices of an outpatient medical facility, including working knowledge of clinic operations
- Thorough knowledge of professional nursing principles, methods and procedures; anatomy and physiology; medical supplies and equipment used in nursing practice; and the uses and effects of medications and narcotics
- Working knowledge of the applicable state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to registered nursing and the scope of practice of various staff within the facility
- Ability to effectively apply nursing knowledge and demonstrate proper techniques and apply specialized skills in performing nursing duties
- Ability to accurately observe and record symptoms, behaviors, and reactions to treatments in order to make a nursing diagnosis
- Ability to analyze emergency situations and triage appropriately
- Working knowledge of electronic health record systems
- Ability to perform accurately in a detail-oriented environment
- Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and privacy in compliance with applicable state and federal laws and regulations; appropriately handle sensitive communications with employees and external agencies
- Effective communication across a variety of venues. Must possess excellent customer service and public relations skills
- Ability to effectively establish and maintain cooperative working relationships within a diverse multicultural environment
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Completion of a professional nursing program in an approved school of nursing or by additional preparation as approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing
- Possess and maintain a valid license as a registered nurse in the State of California and certification in CPR/AED
- One (1) year of progressively responsible full-time professional nursing experience or equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities
