Title: Maintenance Mechanic Helper  

Location: Upper East Side; Lower East Side; Midtown; West Side  

Org Unit: Main Campus - Plant 

Work Days: Weekdays and some weekends

Salary Range: $27.75 - $32.64  

*As required under NYC Human Rights Law Int 1208-2018 - Salary range for this role when Hired for NYC Offices 

Position Summary

Under direct supervision, provides general assistance with the maintenance and repair services on infrastructure and architectural systems

Job Responsibilities

• Assists with the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair services on heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC+R) systems.
• Assists with the maintenance of plumbing systems. Assists in the operation of various types of power drain cleaning machines.
• Assists with the maintenance of utility systems.
• Responds to and resolves basic service calls. Escalates as needed.
• Assists in providing shutdowns of selected utility systems during construction activities.
• Performs general maintenance of machine rooms including replacing lighting, removing debris and general cleaning.
• Unloads and distributes materials and equipment received to stock and work areas.
• Completes and submits a variety of service requests and preventative maintenance tasks indicating work performed and time and material spent.

Education

• High school diploma or GED

Experience

Approximately 1-3 years of experience in general maintenance within a large institution or commercial facility with complex infrastructure systems

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Ability to work on off-shifts as required to accommodate on-going operations and/or emergencies.
• Ability to be available for 24-hour emergency call-ins.

Working Conditions/Physical Demands

Position requires working in a non-office environment where there are some physical discomforts such as noise, dust, heat, fumes and other elements which are continuously present; Periodic work in animal research areas, work in machine rooms, crawl spaces, areas where there are odors from maintenance products, leaks, dust, dark areas, dampness, areas with restricted access, and noise; Frequent use of ladders to perform work; Work is performed both indoors and outdoors; Ability to grasp, lift and/or carry or otherwise move objects weighing a minimum of 50 pounds and push/pull objects up to 100 pounds; Position requires the utilization of hand tools, power tools, large wrenches; operation of small to large valves; visually and audibly required to observe operating equipment; ability to walk, stand, climb ladders/scaffolds, bend, reach, lift and carry
