Summary

The Vehicle Maintenance Assistant is responsible for performing basic servicing and upkeep of County vehicles, including light maintenance tasks such as bulb and windshield wiper replacement, fluid checks, fueling, vehicle inspections, and general operational readiness. All work is performed in accordance with the Department of Community Transit’s procedures and guidelines.

Examples of duties

  • Complies with safety policies and regulations while using a variety of hand and power tools; completes all required safety training.
  • Transports vehicles by safely driving vehicles to staging areas, parking areas, or off-site locations as needed for pick-up or emergencies.
  • Determines the condition of vehicles by inspecting before and after use; logging inspection information and reporting deficiencies as required.
  • Ensures County vehicles are maintained and ready for service by fueling, checking fluids, replacing bulbs, replacing windshield wipers, and reporting vehicle issues.
  • Contributes to customer satisfaction by ensuring vehicles are operational and prepared for daily service needs.
  • Posts and removes notices in vehicles, checks and refills brochure racks, and documents maintenance activities.
  • Conserves and maintains supplies by using equipment and supplies as needed; monitors inventory and requests needed materials.
  • Provides vehicle information by answering questions and requests from managers and supervisors.
  • Documents actions by completing all paperwork and logs as required.
  • Maintains a safe work area by ensuring tools, materials, and equipment are stored properly.
  • Contributes to effective communication within the organization by maintaining communication lines with staff and keeping management informed of critical vehicle issues.
  • Maintains knowledge/skills by attending training sessions, reviewing manuals, and completing required certifications.
  • Responds to emergency situations by driving transit vehicles to assist operators or dispatchers.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Skills, Knowledge & Experience:
Education: This position does not require a high school degree or GED equivalent.
Experience: At least six (6) months of driving experience, with some general work experience. Experience in public transit/transportation as an operator is desirable. Must be a minimum of 18 years of age, have an acceptable driving record, and pass required background verification according to Chester County Department of Community Transit standards.
Qualifications / Requirements:
• Basic skill to use a personal computer and various software packages.
• Ability to maintain logs and records.
• Ability to work independently and proceed with objectives.
• Ability to work extended hours, as necessary.

Relevant background checks, clearances, physicals, drug tests, and any other assessments or evaluations will be conducted after an offer of employment is given per County policy.

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this position, an individual is frequently required to stand, walk, talk, hear, and climb stairs. Occasionally, an individual may sit, bend at the waist, reach above shoulders, kneel, stoop, crouch, or squat. Close vision (20 inches or less) is required.
Work Environment:
Duties will typically be performed in an outdoor environment where noise levels may vary. Duties may occasionally be performed at off-site locations and may involve exposure to excessive heat, cold, or moderate to loud noise levels.

• PA Child Abuse
• PA Criminal History
• FBI Criminal History
• DOT medical card issued by a company-authorized healthcare provider
• Valid PA motor vehicle operator’s license with no suspensions or revocations, and current automobile insurance coverage
