Agency Description

The Philadelphia Water Department is a municipal department of approximately 2500 employees working in all facets to provide water/wastewater treatment services to the City of Philadelphia and the surrounding counties. PWD/Construction Branch/Green Division is responsible for the construction management of Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) projects throughout the City. These GSI projects include tree trenches, rain gardens, bump outs and other similar stormwater water management features. Construction management includes inspections to verify plans and spec conformance, start up, public safety, traffic control, payments, change orders, coordination, scheduling, inspection logs, ticket verification and close-out.

Job Description

Position Summary:

Under the supervision of a Construction Engineer and/or Inspector, the intern will be responsible for the start up of GSI projects that include the creation of inspector binders, creating pay application spreadsheets, creating project tracking sheets and filling out information gathered from various sources, the reviewing plans and specs, as-builts, quantity take-offs, learning the various PWD apps such as SharePoint and CIPIT. Administration duties include printing plans, tracking information and uploading/updating data into SharePoint and CIPIT.

The intern will gather a good understanding of the Water Department, in particular the Green Stormwater Division. Intern will learn various internal PWD programs, procedures and operations. The intern will work with Green partners such as PWD/Design and their consultants, contractors, testing labs, surveyors & other City departments. Intern will learn about construction means and methods and get field experience.

Essential Functions:

Microsoft Suite (ie. Word and Excel) and Bluebeam. Good understanding of Geometry.

Competencies, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Applicants are required to meet the following minimum requirements:

- Must be enrolled as a full-time student

- Valid US driver’s license preferred, though a personal vehicle is not required.

Work-Life:

This is a 40 hour a week position with flexible start times between 7:00am & 9:00am. There is some work from home opportunity and if the intern's school schedule allows, the position can be part-time in the fall/winter once the intern returns to school.

Qualifications

Detail oriented, good communication skills, Wants to learn about construction and is able to assist with creating & updating spreadsheets.

Majors : Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Construction Management
