POSITION SUMMARY

The Assistant Band Director supports the school's band program by directing the 6th and 7th grade bands and co-teaching the 5th grade beginning band. This role focuses on developing young musicians through effective daily instruction, ensemble leadership, and a positive growth-oriented classroom environment. The position collaborates closely with the Head Band Director to maintain a cohesive curriculum, prepare students for performances, and build a strong, inclusive band culture. 

The Assistant Band Director is responsible for creating a learning environment where students are known, challenged, and supported as they grow academically, socially, and spiritually. This role exists to guide students through a critical stage of development by delivering engaging instruction, fostering positive relationships, and reinforcing consistent expectations. 

The Assistant Band Director works under the leadership and support of the Middle School and Elementary School Principals and collaborates closely with colleagues and support staff to serve students and partner with families. 

The overall impact of this role is a strong, healthy school culture where students feel safe, valued, and motivated to learn - and where academic growth, character formation, and community are intentionally cultivated every day. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES


Plans and delivers developmentally appropriate, engaging instruction aligned with curriculum standards, school expectations, skill progression, and ensemble development. 
Creates and maintains a structured, supportive classroom environment with clear routines, consistent expectations, and effective management of large class sizes. 
Instructs students in music literacy, music theory, ensemble skills, and individual instrumental techniques. 
Selects developmentally appropriate repertoire for 6th and 7th grade instrumental ensembles. 
Provides individual and small group instruction during and outside of class to support student growth. 
Differentiates instruction to meet diverse learning needs and supports students with varying academic, social, and emotional needs. 
Builds and sustains positive relationships with students that promote belonging, accountability, and personal growth.
Monitors and assesses student learning using a variety of formative and summative measures to guide instruction and provide timely feedback. 
Tracks and implements student accommodations and learning supports, ensuring accurate communication and collaboration with the Extend Team and Student Support Services. 
Maintains accurate and up-to-date records related to attendance, grading, and required documentation within the school's student information systems. 
Works closely with the Head Director on program planning and coordination, including preparing and executing three annual concerts (concert scripting, percussion assignments, solo preparation, and logistics). 
Participates in active retention and recruiting efforts to build and sustain the band program. 
Coordinates and supervises three annual field trips. 
Supports and reinforces school-wide behavioral expectations and contributes to a positive school culture. 
Manages and tracks inventory of instruments, equipment, and classroom materials. 
Assists with organizing and maintaining the music library. 
Coordinates regularly with families regarding performances, filed trips, student progress, concerns, attendance, and classroom expectations. 
Collaborates actively with the Head Band Director, colleagues, the Middle School Dean of Teaching and Learning, the Extend Team, support staff, and administration to support student learning and team goals. 
Participates in professional learning, team meetings, and school events as part of the broader school community. 
Participates in and supports school-wide safety protocols, including drills and emergency procedures. 
Models professionalism, integrity, and care in interactions with students, families, and colleagues. 
Supervises and supports students during assigned duties and co-curricular activities as needed.
