Job Summary:
The mission of the Division of Business Services is to support UW-Madison's institutional responsibilities of higher education and research. Business Services offers a broad range of services and transaction processing to campus, including accounting, internal auditing, risk management, purchasing, materials distribution and surplus property management, and tuition and student loan services.
Located in the Division of Business Services, Accounting Services provides financial services and management for UW-Madison, including the processing and reporting of accounting data. The department develops and implements financial policies and procedures for university-wide business processes for compliance with tax laws and other Federal and State regulations.
UW-Madison is currently seeking an Accountant II, that supports Accounting Services, under the Financial Reporting, Analysis, and Systems function within the Division of Business Services. The Accountant II position will play an important role in preparing periodic and annual financial reports in accordance with GAAP and GASB standards, and analyzing financial data for UW-Madison. Under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Financial Reporting, Analysis, and Systems, this role will actively participate in preparing and maintaining the UW-Madison general ledger. Responsibilities include preparing balance sheet account and income statement clearing account reconciliations, reviewing and processing journal entries, maintaining the UW-Madison chart of accounts, and assisting with organizing and recording monetary gifts and gifts in kind and related documentation. The role also involves maintaining collaborative relationships with campus departments, upholding campus-wide policies and procedures, assisting with audits, and contributing financial data for UW System Financial Reports.
Principal duties:
A. Actively participate in the development, application, and preparation of the UW-Madison general ledger and chart of accounts, including month end and fiscal year end close activities.
B. Prepare periodic and annual financial reports and financial data.
C. Participate in the development, maintenance, and continuous support of financial needs of the UW-Madison campus.
D. Maintain gift and gift-in-kind project accounting and reporting responsibilities.
Responsibilities:
Performs advanced accounting duties following generally accepted accounting principles and procedures. Prepares and reviews financial reports and assists with budgeting. Ensures the accurate recording and reporting of the business unit's financial transactions.- 10% Organizes, prepares, and updates financial statements, monthly and year-end journal entries, accounts, ledgers, and reports for various financial needs within an automated financial system to ensure accurate recording and reporting of financial transactions
- 10% Prepares and analyzes financial data, reports and records, identifies discrepancies, investigates, recommends, and implements solutions as needed
- 20% Develops and maintains automated financial systems, recommending controls to ensure system reliability and data integrity
- 20% Assists with accounting and reviewing reconciliations, journal entries, schedules, and reports
- 15% Answers questions and provides accounting related information to internal and external stakeholders according to established policies and procedures
- 25% Prepares and/or approves financial transactions and payments

Education:
Required
Bachelor's Degree in accounting, finance, or related field of business studies.
Qualifications:
Required
- Minimum of 3 years of accounting, finance, or business administration experience
Preferred:
- Professional work experience with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and theories.
- Knowledge of computer applications, automated accounting systems, and general financial applications.
- Ability to prepare, analyze, and interpret financial data using Excel.
