About the role

SUMMARY

The Laboratory Technician is responsible for the daily operation of the laboratory and maintaining the testing equipment.  S/he works with referring agencies and with other agency programs in completing testing of clients for drugs of abuse.  This individual is trained and knowledgeable in all aspects of testing abused drug and is an information resource for probation officers and agency program staff. This position requires self-confidence and the ability to exercise individual discretion or judgment.  S/he must have ability to convey a positive and professional image to clients, staff and visitors and must be able to maintain client confidentiality. S/he must be computer literate and possess good organizational skills.  The Lab Technician must be able to perform duties involving light lifting, and possess an ability to sit for long periods of time.  This position is classified as a category 3 driving position.

Pay Ranges from $25-$30 per hour

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Follow all laboratory policies and procedures; adheres to all health and safety standards.
  • Collects and prepares samples for testing. Enters appropriate data into the computer.
  • Operates the drug testing analyzers and conducts testing of urine samples from all referring agencies, ensuring accuracy and quality in every aspect of the testing process.
  • Maintains appropriate documentation of all daily requirements as set forth by the College of American Pathologists.
  • Process urine samples, following proper procedures to ensure integrity, accuracy and “chain of custody.”
  • Maintains knowledge and resource materials on drug analysis and drugs of abuse. Attends appropriate training, as required or directed.
  • Maintains inventory of all chemicals and supplies needed to operate the drug-testing laboratory. Orders supplies as needed.
  • Appears and testifies in court when requested by the referring agencies or when otherwise required doing so.
  • Prepares any required documentation or information for court.
  • Maintains computer records of all samples collected and tested. Prepares computerized reports of results for referring agencies and RS Eden staff in a timely manner.
  • Maintains proper training and certification in regards to the drug testing analyzers.
  • Freezes and stores all positive samples for confirmation purposes for a minimum of 30 days.
  • Participates in staff meetings and training as required or directed.
  • Performs daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance on all testing analyzers.
  • Performs quality assurance testing on a quarterly basis ensuring accuracy of the drug testing process.
  • Performs daily controls of the testing analyzer making sure that all controls are in range before processing samples. Calibrates analyzer for drugs tested as required or needed. Maintains proper documentation for all daily controls that are run and calibrations that are required.
  • Maintains proper documentation of all daily requirements as set forth by the College of American Pathologists.
  • Knows and follows program emergency procedures when necessary.
  • Understands and follows incident/accident reporting policies and procedures.
  • Understands and follows emergency fire and weather policies and procedures.
  • Attends meetings and other training events as required by your supervisor.
  • Safeguard personally identifiable health information (PHI) in accordance with duties and current agency HIPAA notification statement and standards.
  • Responds to client emergency medical needs, when required.

  • Performs other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS

  • Degree in Medical Technology or related Life Science.
  • Prefer someone with 2+ years of experience in a laboratory setting.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and strong organizational abilities.
  • Ability to work alone with little supervision.
  • Basic understanding of computers and good data entry skills.
  • Good oral and written skills.
  • Must be able to pass favorable criminal history check.
  • Discharged from chemical treatment program for period of 2-yrs, if applicable.
  • Minimum 2-yrs continuous sobriety, if applicable.
  • Crime-free for period of 1-yrs, if applicable.
  • Ability to relate to people from diverse backgrounds with multiple problems.
