About the role

Working as a member of a team, the Biosecurity Inspector (Travellers & Cargo) will undertake clearance of travellers and cargo to detect and prevent biosecurity risks entering Tasmania.

  • Work in varying operational environments including airports, seaports, cruise terminals, and post and freight terminals.
  • Undertake inspection and surveillance activities.
  • Engage with members of the public, providing advice on biosecurity legislation, policies, and practices.
  • Provide operational support to the Biosecurity Tasmania Detector Dog teams.

This recruitment process will be used to fill initial vacancies in Devonport (part time) and Launceston (full time). These positions are fixed-term for two years.

Hours per fortnight

Launceston : 73.5 hours (minimum 58.8, by negotiation) – in accordance with an approved roster.

Devonport:    36.75 hours per fortnight.

Period of appointment

2 years.

Pre employment checks

  • The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this position is to satisfy a pre-employment check before taking up the appointment, promotion or transfer.

The following checks are to be conducted:

  1. Conviction check in the following conviction areas:
  1. Crimes of violence
  2. Sex related offences
  3. Serious drug offences
  4. Crimes involving dishonesty
  5. Serious traffic offences
  6. Any other offences under the Biosecurity Act 2019, or related legislation
  • Satisfactory security clearance as required by port authorities.

Desirable requirements

  • Current unrestricted full or provisional motor vehicle driver’s licence.
  • A Certificate IV qualification, or the ability to obtain a Certificate IV qualification in plant health, animal health, land management or invasive species management biosecurity emergency management or government investigations or statutory compliance relevant to the nature of the work to be undertaken, as provided by either a university, a vocational education organisation or a registered and accredited training provider.
