About the Job
We are an innovative global healthcare company with one purpose: to chase the miracles of science to improve people’s lives. We’re also a company where you can flourish and grow your career, with countless opportunities to explore, make connections with people, and stretch the limits of what you thought was possible. Ready to get started?
The Senior Data Scientist - Process Simulation and Control will support advanced process simulation and control activities for the continuous manufacturing of biopharmaceutical (antibodies, nanobodies and gene therapies) and pharmaceutical (chemical API) products. This is an exciting opportunity to demonstrate the benefits of advanced process control in a cutting-edge scientific department developing the next generation of Sanofi medicines that will improve the quality of life for patients across the world.
This position is at the Framingham, MA location. The ideal candidate will live within a reasonable daily commute.
As part of matrix project teams, develop, test and deploy advanced process control schemes (leveraging on either classical control theory or model-predictive control theory) for continuous manufacturing processes for either biopharmaceutical or pharmaceutical products.
Use programming languages such as Julia, Python, MATLAB or R to translate complex mathematical models and optimization algorithms into clean and reusable codes for routine implementation in an industrial setting.
In coordination with the process development and automation experts within the organization, define clear and sustainable implementation strategies for advanced process control schemes within the distributed control systems (DCS) of the manufacturing processes.
Contribute to the end-to-end industrialization strategy for advanced process control within Sanofi’s (bio)-manufacturing processes in compliance with regulatory and quality requirements.
Document progress against deliverables with rigorous scientific communication via technical presentations, reports and, when appropriate, scientific publications.
Maintain a communication plan with key stakeholders and partners across departments.
About You
Earned PhD in Engineering (Mechanical/Chemical/Biochemical) with specialization in Advanced Process Control and a minimum of 3 years of related experience (or an earned Master's degree with 7 years of related experience).
Proven track record of developing, testing and deploying advanced process control schemes, ideally in the biopharmaceutical industry, with publications in peer reviewed journals.
Demonstrated knowledge of model-predictive control (MPC) with industrial and/or academic publications in this field.
Demonstrated ability to translate mathematical models and optimization algorithms into computer programs using programming languages (Julia, Python, MATLAB, R or similar).
Familiarity with continuous manufacturing for biopharmaceuticals, with a focus on downstream unit operations (chromatography/filtration).
Demonstrated knowledge and application of Machine Learning / Multivariate Analysis methodologies to biological processes.
Working knowledge and/or prior experience with flow chemistry applications (i.e. telescopic reactions).
Experience with process simulation software (e.g. gPROMS) and integrated systems modelling applications (i.e. flowsheet modelling), and/or working knowledge/prior experience with industrial automation software (DeltaV or DMC).
Project management experience with an ability to communicate with transparency.
