Job Summary

The Senior Carpenter plans and performs complex construction, installation, and repair of structures, woodwork, cabinetry, doors, hardware, and glazing systems conforming to state and local building codes. The Senior Carpenter works as a member of a versatile team performing office/lab fit up, structural and finish system maintenance, remodeling and minor construction projects. The Senior Carpenter also assists other trades with repair and maintenance work.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School/Equivalent in N/A
  • Five (5) years general carpentry experience
  • Valid US driver’s license 

Applicants must meet stated minimum education and experience requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two (2) years additional experience as a finish carpenter/cabinet maker is desired
  • Two (2) years additional experience with fire door inspections as per NFPA 80

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Must have ability to become Certified Lead Safe Renovator and ability to meet OSHA’s Lead Handler medical/respirator qualifications
  • In-depth knowledge of carpentry, cabinet making, wood working trade, shop equipment and tools
  • In-depth knowledge of all phases of door installation and repair
  • Working knowledge of basic industry trades including plumbing, masonry, roofing, electrical, sheet metal and duct work
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Ability to read, write, and perform arithmetic functions
  • Ability to read and build from blue prints, drawings, and specifications.
  • Ability to use hand tools and power tools of the trade
  • Ability to work on ladders, scaffolding, and personnel lifts
  • Ability to work in a team environment or perform independently
  • Requires excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to foster an inclusive environment and work with a diverse population

Job Duties

  1. Plan, organize, and perform complex work assignments related to all phases of carpentry, ranging from rough carpentry to finish carpentry. 
  2. Read and follow blueprints, sketches, or building plans for information pertaining to type of material required, and dimensions of structure or fixture to be fabricated.   
  3. Select appropriate materials; assists carpenters and trainees in selecting appropriate materials. Prepare layouts; mark cuttings and assembly lines on materials and assemble according to specifications and plans. 
  4. Fit and install prefabricated or custom-built window frames, doors, doorframes, weather stripping, interior and exterior trim, and finish hardware. Install, replace, and troubleshoot door hardware and window hardware including fire and smoke doors.  Install window air conditioning units. Install and repair drywall and other interior finishes as required. 
  5. Lay out ceilings and grid work; replace damaged ceiling tile and floor tile. Build custom cabinets, counters, benches, display cases, and wooden trim
  6. Perform glass repair and glazing, including repairs to skylight and curtain wall glazing systems. 
  7. Maintain equipment, supplies and work area in a neat and orderly condition; return equipment, tools and materials to the proper storage area.  
  8. Perform complex work assignments related to all phases of door installation and repair. Skill in accurately hanging doors with proper alignment and clearance. Expertise in fitting and installing door handles, hinges, and other hardware. Mechanical aptitude of how automatic doors and hydraulic components work. Familiarity with local building codes related to door installation and NFPA 80 fire door standard and inspections.
  9. Perform other duties as assigned.
