Job Description
SUMMARY:
Reporting directly to the Director of Residential Education, the Assistant Director leads a residential area housing 2200-2800 students, and provides supervision and guidance to a large team of professional staff Community Directors, graduate student staff Assistant Community Directors and Peer Mentors, and undergraduate student student staff positions.
The Assistant Director is responsible for supervision and evaluation of four full-time live-in staff members, as well as indirect supervision of the Assistant Community Directors, Peer Mentors, planning and implementation of programs to foster student leadership development, community building and socialization, and academic success. This position manages the student behavior process, personnel and administrative policies, and addresses physical environment concerns. This is a live-out position, but requires both on and off-site emergency contact outside normal office hours, on weekends and occasional holidays.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provides direct supervision, coaching, and professional development for full-time live-in residence life staff. Approves work schedules, payroll, and leave requests.
Conducts regular one-on-one meetings and team meetings to ensure effective communication, accountability, and support.
Oversees daily operations and staffing of residence halls, ensuring alignment with departmental goals and student development best practices.
Manages performance evaluations, goal-setting, and professional growth plans for supervised staff.
Responds to crisis situations, providing leadership, guidance, and coordination with campus partners as needed.
Ensures staff compliance with university policies, housing regulations, and emergency protocols.
Supports community development initiatives, assisting Community Programmers with residence hall programming initiatives.
Participates in managerial on-call duty rotation, providing support and guidance to live-in staff during after-hours emergencies.
Collaborates with campus partners such as Counseling and Psychological Services, University Police, Facilities, etc. to support resident safety and well-being.
Assists with the orientation, training, selection, recruitment efforts for Residence Life. Supports all conference, on-campus and committee-led staff recruitment processes, including the design and preparation of resources and materials for recruitment and selection processes, including but not limited to interview questions, scoring rubrics, marketing materials, and status letters.
Contributes to the implementation and evaluation of a comprehensive training program for staff including coordinating events, speakers, consultants, meals, materials, and social activities.
Assists with the development and preparation of all learning objectives, performance objectives, materials and manuals for training of all professional positions.
Coordinates and is present on site for all hall opening, closing and transition-related activities in their area of responsibility.
Collaborates with Director of Residential Education on the implementation and success of living learning communities in assigned area.
Participates in general staff meetings and divisional meetings, committees, and assists with on-campus admissions visit programs and new student orientation.
