About the role

Job Description Summary

The Department of Linguistics at the University of Maryland combines current theoretical research in phonology, syntax, and semantics with state-of-the-art experimental research in language acquisition, computational linguistics, psycholinguistics and neurolinguistics, in order to understand the human capacity for language. Connections between our core competencies are strong, with theoretical, experimental and computational work typically pursued in tandem. A network of collaboration at all levels sustains a research climate that is both vigorous and friendly. Here new ideas develop in conversation, stimulated by the steady activity of our labs and research groups, frequent student meetings with faculty, regular talks by local and invited scholars and collaborations with a campus community of over 200 language scientists.

In support of the Director of Administrative Services, this position provides administrative management of the daily business functions of the Department of Linguistics in the areas of finance, personnel, procurement, travel services and event coordination. Duties include but are not limited to:
processing day-to-day financial transactions; processing payroll transactions; initiating international visa requests; procurement requests to include the departmental purchasing card; coordinating all faculty, staff, graduate student, and guest travel; maintaining inventory database for equipment; event coordination; and serving as the departmental parking coordinator.

Physical Demands: Typical office environment. Requires the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards. May occasionally require some walking to different locations on campus for meetings.

License/Certifications: N/A

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED.

EXPERIENCE: Six years progressively responsible experience in a combination of budgeting, accounting, payroll, purchasing, and personnel work.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

Working knowledge of and ability to apply Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Working knowledge of management principles and practices. Skill in applying basic analytical skills to review expenditures and revenues, prepare forecasts, and reconcile accounts. Skill in performing basic mathematical computations. Skill in planning work and supervising others. Skill in organizing and executing multiple assignments under specific time constraints. Ability to understand and interpret University policies and procedures in the areas of finance, human resources, payroll, purchasing, and sponsored programs. Ability to prepare and present budgetary, accounting, and other reports and schedules. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to operate office equipment, computers, and related software. Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters with discretion and tact.

OTHER:

Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
