This position has the administrative responsibility for the overall coordination of nursing services during an assigned off-shift, such as evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. The Nursing Supervisor is responsible for ensuring the most efficient coordination patient placement and efficient patient flow, and is responsible for effectively communicating with appropriate Nurse Managers about issues that arise in their absence and for serving as an administrative, clinical and educational resource to the patient care staff.I. Major Responsibilities:
1. Serves as the administrative authority responsible for the provision of quality nursing care and the smooth function of all nursing units on an assigned shift, working collaboratively with physicians, administrators and other patient care staff. Directs all bed management/flow activities.
2. Responsible for leading the bed management and appropriate, efficient bed placement. Actively manages patient flow to ensure reduced boarding time in ED.
3. Responsible for monitoring the quality of nursing services. Receives reports throughout the shift.
4. Performs rounds throughout the shift to assure efficient patient flow and high quality, safe patient care.
5. Addresses and resolves urgent concerns, patient and family complaints occurring during the shift; and notifies the appropriate Nurse Manager as necessary.
6. Coordinates the smooth transition of operations upon shift changes. Receives reports from the off-going Nurse Supervisor about patient and staffing concerns and provides a report to the on-coming Nurse supervisor.
7. Assures that proper staffing is in place. Coordinates efforts with the appropriate Nurse Managers to determine the optimal allocation of staff per shift on each unit. Reviews schedules, receives employee call-offs, replaces for absences for upcoming shifts, etc.
8. Provides advice and counsel to nursing staff for emergencies and in medical management, crisis and behavior management techniques.
9. Leads appropriate action in response to emergency situations. Coordinates with other functions, such as engineering, maintenance and security. Notifies Nursing Directors or Senior
10. Management in timely fashion when appropriate.
11. Maintains a current knowledge of trends and techniques in the field of nursing and specialized areas applicable to HealthAlliance Hospital.
12. Directs staff response to emergencies, such as severe weather, fire, etc.
13. Notifies Nursing Managers of assigned staff learning needs.
14. Assists Nursing Managers in completing performance evaluations for nurses on assigned shift.
15. Addresses urgent employee issues and administers appropriate personnel action in the event of urgent employee discipline problems.
16. Interacts with the electronic staffing and scheduling system.
17. Utilizes the electronic solutions including the time and attendance system, productivity reporting and acuity modules.
18. Coordinates the replenishment of supplies during the shift as necessary.
19. Participates in process improvement and system process improvement initiatives.
20. Functions as a resource to staff related to the electronic time and attendance system
21. Functions as a super-user for various systems including the electronic medical record.
