The remaining 9 beds serve intermediate level patients. The nurses on this unit can manage a-lines, lumbar drains, and titrate cardiac drips on the intermediate care patients. Our patient population consists of primarily Advance Heart Failure, Cardiology, and Vascular surgery patients. This unit functions as the stepdown unit for the Ashley River Tower offering a higher level of care for the many specialties in this building. Nurse: patient ratios range from 1:1-1:3 based on patient acuity. This highly engaged team is innovative, dynamic, and fast-paced.
Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU)
The CTICU is a 21 bed Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit specializing in everything Cardiac Surgery. We care for patients post operatively after coronary bypass, valve replacements/repairs, and aortic dissection repairs. We also care for patients after thoracic surgery including esophagectomies, and pneumonectomies. We are the only heart and lung transplant center in the State and are top 5 in the nation for LVAD implantation. We care for patients that have many different methods of mechanical circulatory support i.e. intraortic balloon pumps, impellas, centrimag, and we are the only adult unit that manages VA ECMO. We are the only unit that is specialized and certified in CSU-ALS which is ACLS for post cardiac surgery. Any one of our beds can be used for emergent surgeries and procedures. Given the fast pace, and high acuity we have an extensive orientation process. There are several opportunities for professional growth, with experienced nurses expanding their skills through Rapid Response or ECMO teams, and engaging in leadership through our highly active RSL/CSL roles. The unit Shared Governance is actively contributing to any practice changes and workflow improvements.
