POSITION SUMMARY:          

This position will work on drafting and design of civil engineering projects utilizing Computer Aided Drafting programs and design software.  Position will work independently with a high level of independent decision making ability and serve as a resource to other technicians and designers by providing training, guidance and mentorship.  This position has a focus in transportation projects.  Project work will include:  roads, highways, interchanges, stormwater conveyance and associated work.         

Responsibilities

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • In coordination with a team of surveyors, project managers, engineers and technicians, performs complex drafting assignments and/or routine design assignments on state and municipal transportation design projects.
  • Utilizes Microstation and Geopak or AutoCAD and Civil 3D to draft/design roadway elements.
  • Will focus on roadway, drainage, and traffic signal drafting/design work.
  • Responsibilities will include everything from conceptual designs to completing construction documents.
  • Includes transferring information from other team members into Computer Aided Drafting software programs and applying appropriate symbols and drafting standards to create a quality finished product.
  • Works with engineer or designer on full plan development. May prepare drawings from rough sketches or interpretation of field notes.
  • Conducts analysis relative to the project assigned. 
  • Will work with conventional engineering practice including a variety of complex features like conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials and difficult coordination requirements.
  • Works with licensed surveyors on preparing plats of survey, subdivision plats, ALTA surveys, exhibits, topographic surveys, LiDAR extraction, and any other documentation needed for the survey crews.
  • May work with field staff to complete documentation of field conditions for eventual reproduction in drawings.
  • Interprets “as-built” and redline information and makes appropriate revisions to plans.
  • Administer basic calculations.
  • Guide and mentor other technicians.
  • May assist in establishing budgets, preparing/presenting proposals and client interactions.
  • Works with a high level of independence with minimal direction.
  • Will be a thought leader in the group and have a well-developed skillset in a technical area.
  • Manages drafting work and interfaces with other disciplines as needed.
  • Typically handles multiple projects for multiple clients simultaneously.
  • May assist Project Engineer/Project Manager with traffic analysis/traffic studies as needed.
  • May assist with 3D corridor modeling as needed.
  • May prepare and review design calculations under direction of Project Engineer/Project Manager.
  • May assist in field with surveying tasks or construction observation/monitoring, as needed. Refer to Survey Technician and Construction Engineering Technician position descriptions for detail of essential functions and responsibilities.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Advanced knowledge and abilities in Microstation, Geopak/Inroads, AutoCAD and Civil 3D software systems
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite
  • Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent required.  2-year technical degree in design and drafting or civil engineering technology preferred.

15+ years drafting/design
